    Trail Blazer... Completed (almost)

Re: Trail Blazer... And so it begins (again) Wow! Thank you for the kind words! Tim

    Trail Blazer... Completed (almost)

Re: Trail Blazer... And so it begins (again) Thanks again all. It turned out nice but to be honest, it has its imperfections. Mostly tiny ones, but I see them. As for the bullet shaped bolts, that was purely unintentional. The truss rods have a really funky thread. The thread was 5/16...

    Trail Blazer... Completed (almost)

Re: Trail Blazer... And so it begins (again) Thanks again! I got a little too excited today and did a premature mock up of the frame and fork.

    Trail Blazer... Completed (almost)

Re: Trail Blazer... And so it begins (again) Thanks all! :D I'm actually going to let this cure for a few days before a little light buffing and polishing as the gray is still pretty soft. Next update may take a while as I'm turning my attention toward the wheelset. This originally had 28"...

    Trail Blazer... Completed (almost)

Re: Trail Blazer... And so it begins (again) Thanks! I still have to get the tool box masked off. It's a bit more tricky since I haven't decided how big the panels should be yet. All goes well, I should have it in primary colors (at least a first coat) by Saturday. Thanks again!

Re: Trail Blazer... And so it begins (again) Taped, masked and almost ready for the primary color! Bracing myself for the moment of truth.

    Trail Blazer... Completed (almost)

Re: Trail Blazer... And so it begins (again) It is a type of automotive paint. Supposedly, it is a very durable finish and uses a hardener that provides a high gloss finish without a clear coat. This is my first time using it and time will tell regarding the durability. It requires mixing...

    Trail Blazer... Completed (almost)

Re: Trail Blazer... And so it begins (again) Slowly, Slowly making progress. Finally decided on the Paint scheme and then had to decide what type of paint and where to order. Ultimately went with an acrylic enamel. A bit more tricky than the alternatives but essentially eliminates the need...

    Guv'nor Look-A-Like

Thanks! I'm looking for a set of creme colored 700C tires. These look nice and they're available in 700c sizes. Once again great bike!

    Guv'nor Look-A-Like

Very nice! I definitely like it. Couple of Questions... 1) What tire and rim combination did you use? 2) what type of crankset is that? It's got a great vintage look. Thanks! Tim

Pre-war Elgin, a new project begins

Nope, they are the same screws. I soaked them in white vinegar over night and then scrubed them lightly with a small brush to get into the nooks and crannies. That was primarily surface rust that comes off pretty easily and the white vinegar won't harm the color.

Pre-war Elgin, a new project begins

They Do look very nice. I tried this with an old BMX stem about a year ago just to get a feel for it. I stripped the Anodizing with Drain cleaner (AKA Sodium Hydroxide) and then sanded and buffed it to a nice polish. This was pretty beat and I didn't even try to pull out the dents and dings...

Pre-war Elgin, a new project begins

Aaron, Did you strip the Anodizing before you polished these? I have a NOS but water stained set of BMX rims that I've been thinking about stripping and polishing but that can be intimidating. Also, I sorta' see where this is going. I have a NOS set of Red anodized MKS pedals that might...

    Trail Blazer... Completed (almost)

Slow tedious work, but we're almost ready for Paint... So... I now know more than I've ever cared to know about grinding, stripping, metal filling and priming among other nasty gritty things. After having the frame move along nicely I quickly became bogged down in the smaller parts most of...

    Hawthorne Motorbike w/ Quick Bricks

Thanks for the Link. Great old bike. Looks like a Mead to me based on the frame and Chainring. Also looks like this might fit perfectly... http://cgi.ebay.com/Vintage-MEAD-CYCLE-CO-RANGER-CHICAGO-Bicycle-Badge-/150473747437?cmd=ViewItem&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2308ef2bed Once again...

    Sheldon Brown's Klunker Build

Just out of curiousity. Did I miss something with the fork? Is it backwards?
