Sounds like a cheap crankset is the way to go. I've got to pull the old one off anyway to get the chainguard bracket off. Thanks for the responses.

It's the newer frame. This thing is really lightweight for a cruiser.

I've got a Straight 8 with the chopper fork and would like to trade for the newer black fork if they are compatible.
