    Late 60s-early 70s Columbia 10 speed

This one is nearing the finish line. I scrapped my cyclocross idea, and now it's built up with 26" cruiser wheels and slick tires. It's more of a true rat now, with lots of crusty parts. I'm loving it... Added a rack and a true speedo instead of the RPM gauge: Very rusty wheels and a...

    DX 29er - Finished

Wow, I absolutely love this bike. Great work. The spoon idea is a nice touch.

Commuter/Utility bike build -- SHOW ME YOUR AT-4s

Wow, the difference between the iPad camera and a real digital camera are pretty stark in those two pictures.

Commuter/Utility bike build -- SHOW ME YOUR AT-4s

As she sits today: I love the slack angles and the stable feel of this bike. Straightening the derailleur hanger wasn't hard, but the threads were a little mangled. I did manage to thread the new derailleur on. I cut the rubber grips off because I was impatient, and because I might add...

Commuter/Utility bike build -- SHOW ME YOUR AT-4s

Re: SHOW ME YOUR AT-4s Ok, so this didn't exactly take off so I'll turn it into a build thread. :D I've had these AT-4s on my original mountain bike back in the early 90s, but they've just been sitting around for a long time and I didn't really know what to do with them. I knew they...

    Late 60s-early 70s Columbia 10 speed

Haven't done much with this build except think about it and add this bar/stem combo: I'm looking to do a cyclocross race in a few months, and I think this will be the bike I use for it. I'm probably going to swap out the one-piece crank for a three-piece setup just to shave off a little...

    50's Western Flyer-badged CWC skiptooth

Thanks guys. Hsean, I love the rust look too. Your bike is definitely a little older than mine, because it has the curved fender braces. Mine is at least a '46 or older, because it has a Bendix rear hub. I'm still thinking its a '50 or a '51.

Sweet find. That looks like a fun bike.

    50's Western Flyer-badged CWC skiptooth

Oh yeah, and the front wheel is from my mountain bike. You can probably tell it's not original by the quick-release skewer that's on the wrong side of the frame.

    50's Western Flyer-badged CWC skiptooth

I've been watching this one on CL for about a year now. It was far enough away that I could talk myself out of it, so I never made the trip. But this weekend I was headed off for weekend at my buddy's camp and practically driving right by it, so it's mine. I had brought the whitewall...

First build -- Big Boy BMX

Re: First build - Big Boy BMX...now not so much Thanks Texon. I ended up putting the Schwinn frame back together with 26 x 1 3/8 wheels and selling it at a swap this spring. I'm using the tires on my Columbia Twosome now, which had been my original plan. I just got it together enough to ride...

Commuter/Utility bike build -- SHOW ME YOUR AT-4s

Dug these out the other day: Anyone else got any to share? Other Scott bars and funky bar-ends would be fine too.

First build -- Big Boy BMX

Thanks Kenny. It was fun to crunch around in the snow on. The speedo is out for this build. I'm using it here instead: http://www.ratrodbikes.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=58&t=68890&p=665435#p665435

    Late 60s-early 70s Columbia 10 speed

Thanks Luke, I appreciate the kind words. Just spent a little more time with it, checking out the fenders. My memories of them were a little off; all of the red was gone, so it was just blue and some metal showing through. I still think it looks cool with the blue on the decals. I think I'll...

    Late 60s-early 70s Columbia 10 speed

Not sure what the next step is. I was planning to remove the freewheel and replace it either with a fixed cog (a la the Sheldon Brown conversion method) or a regular BMX freewheel and run it that way. I do have the rear derailleur, though, so it might make a cool 5-speed. I'm planning to...

    Late 60s-early 70s Columbia 10 speed

This was my favorite little detail. I needed a seatpost bolt, and I had this disassembled quick-release seat bolt. With the lever out, it will make a nice cable guide for the rear brake cable. I had this cable guide for the top tube (also from the Scwhinn).

    Late 60s-early 70s Columbia 10 speed

I have a '76 Columbia Roadster that I'm not fond of, and I've been robbing it for parts. I took the stem and bars off it, repacked the headset on the 10-speed, and put it together. I also had a speedometer that I had taken off an exercise bike. The Columbia has a high-flange front hub, and...

    Late 60s-early 70s Columbia 10 speed

I had a burst of inspiration while working in the lab last night. I picked up this bike this week off craigslist (unfortunately I didn't take any proper "before" pics, so this is the only one that I have): The ad said the seller was cleaning house and wanted to get rid of some "projects" for...

Great looking bike! I love that chain guard.

First build -- Big Boy BMX

A couple of minor updates: I'm switching to a wheelset with heavy patina because I like the way the tires look against the rust. And added some new grips (not the best picture). Oh yeah, and winter has come back to Maine. From this: To this:
