If you're looking for a really good book on the history of the bicycle, I would recommend: Bicycle: The History' by David V. Herlihy http://www.amazon.com/Bicycle-History-D ... 0300104189 It can be a little 'dry' at times but is a really good source for the early years.

It all depends on what you are using the bike for. My fixies are both road bikes so the gearing is reasonably high. I also have a single speed 29'er mountain bike that is running 33/18 to get up steep hills etc. If you are running a cruiser/street bike then you would probably want something...

I have two fixies running 46/16 and 52/18. They feel about the same to pedal, great on flat roads and not too bad on hills.

Go for the Brooks, I have three of them and unlike reproductions, they get much better with age :)

I've been riding a Jamis Exile 29'er SS for about 2 years now and I love it. It pretty much rolls over anything on the trail with the bigger wheels. Having gears on the hills are a bonus though so I'm gonna lace up a SRAM 3 speed disk hub to make it perfect.

Re: When life gives you snow, you gotta... Looks like a lot of fun, I love riding in the snow. (I can't believe I'm saying this) but I wish we had some snow in Toronto this year :)
