Need help in extending Sturmey Archer Shifter Cable

I will likely just keep it on as decoration as it does look cool. Maybe somewhere down the line I will figure out how to connect the shorter cable from the shifter to the current cable going to the hub. It just seems like too much of a hassle right now.

Yes I know it isn’t a “derailleur” in the classic sense, but was just using that name for the plastic cover thing that the end cable feeds into. I told you I was a novice 😀.

Need help in extending Sturmey Archer Shifter Cable

Thanks for the good info. I was able to push the barrel end up through some holes in the bottom but it seems to be locked in that channel, for a lack of a better word. See pictures. It doesn’t seem like it was made to be removed unless I am missing something?

Need help in extending Sturmey Archer Shifter Cable

Here is a blurry picture that I found online of the innards of the twinshift shifter that I want to use. You can see that it was not really made to be repairable as the cable end (sorry don’t know the terminology) is locked down tighter than Fort Knox.

So are you talking about somehow ‘splicing’ the newer shifter cable into the current cable going to the derailleur? Because that makes more sense really as that already has the correct hardware and is dialed in. But like I say I am a novice when it comes to bike mechanics.

Need help in extending Sturmey Archer Shifter Cable

Thanks for the reply. The problem is that the shifter has already been permanently mounted. The store that I bought it from strongly advised making modifications to the original cable where it originates at the shifter as it is pretty much locked in place. I looked at it and it did seem like...

Need help in extending Sturmey Archer Shifter Cable

Hi all. I have a 2004 Raleigh Chopper reproduction bike, 3 speed. It does not have the old-style shifter (stick shift) but has the handlegrip shifter as they don’t use those old shifters anymore due to safety reasons. I bought a NOS Sturmey Archer “Twinshift” off of EBay years ago but never...

    My Raleigh Chopper e-bike

Man, he must be in some kind of shape because he has to pedal two revolutions for every one that the road bike riders likely do.

    My Raleigh Chopper e-bike

Thanks Jason. I thought there might be some locals on the board. I had a fleeting idea last night to try to organize some kind of bike ride for bikes like ours. Something like the “Rod Run to the End of the World” in Long Beach WA. But instead call it “Rat Run to the End of the Earth” to...

    My Raleigh Chopper e-bike

Yep. And the battery still works some 5 years later. We have a great A.M. oldies station in my town too, so I can listen to 60’s and 70’s tunes while riding around. Except for when the ‘throttle’ is engaged as this messes up the radio reception and produces the most godawful noise. Trade off’s 🙂.

    My Raleigh Chopper e-bike

Hi All. Good to find this forum. Like most of you I grew up in the “golden age” of the Schwinn Stingray. Or maybe you are younger.......either way you have good taste. I never had a fancy Schwinn but only a hand-me down Stingray that I tried to convert to a motorcross bike when that craze...
