I just picked up a late 50s Schwinn Hornet Springer, the fork seems to have a lot of play ( side to side) in the pivot near the lower headset, is this common or there something missing. the pivot bolt is in there super tight and I don't really want to hammer it out if I don't have to. The bike rides fine and the fork seems much better when there''s some weight on it.

First off Do NOT hammer the pivot bolt out, as it is threaded! Make sure to check all mechanical connections for proper fit and tension, i.e.pivot bolt, yolk bolts, spring retention bolt, head set ,races and bearings. Also check the yolk bolts to see if they are the "proper"type. They should have a square base under the head that seats it firmly in the yolk body, if they are round, this might cause some play. You might also want to dis- assemble the unit and inspect the pivot areas where the pivot bolt goes through, there might be some excessive wear here that could cause excess movement. Later & PEACE!!!!
