I was talking to a buddy about the neighborhood when we were growing up. A bunch has changed and I brought up the Schwinn store in Woodhaven a few block from my house. My first memory is when my Dad went to buy my sister a green 3 speed Breeze for her birthday in 1973. The notion of bicycles on carpet stuck in my head. Also there was this cool slate like tile that lead to the back to the service area.
My mom took me there after school in anuary,1974 to pick out a bike for my 8th birthday.I was overwelmed by the "big bikes" and the line of Stingrays. I picked out a yellow Stingray with a slick on the back. I begged her and she let me ride it home even though there was snow on the ground.
Anyway a was sniffing around the web and found this websight-projectwoodhaven.com ( check it out for some cool pictures)and there it was pictures of the store in my memory-slate linoleum and all.
And yes the bottom pick is of my Stingray. I unearthed it for the first time in many years this spring.
Enjoy,
Jeff

that's cool! i remember the schwinn shop we got our bikes at as kids (anderson's in moline, il). i don't actually remember us buying my first schwinn, but i remember picking out the parts to turn it into a stingray for my birthday several years later- tall sissy bar, rear slik, little flared fenders, and of course the ape hangers. chose a collegiate over a krate in 5th or 6th grade. my dad and his siblings got their schwinns at the same shop in the 40's. he remembers being bummed that his had painted rims while his brother and sisters were chrome! shop's long gone now though.....
