Found at a garage sale by a friend. It was not easy to talk him out of it.
The guy at the garage sale was the original owner.
Looks original except for the grips, cables and rear tire.

Great find..I bet it was hard to talk him out of it..Could you tell us how much it was.
If not I understand..I am Happy for ya wish it was mine..LOL

NICE....My fav part on those was the Mag look crank...I had to settle for a Huffy Rail as a kid... It was cool enough though.

The owner had done some research,so he had some idea what it was worth.
My friend was able to pick it up for $300.00.
I had to sweeten the pot a little, but I still think I got a pretty good deal considering the condition.
Now I need to find a pea picker to have a complete set of 1968 krates.
The apple and orange that I have are both april 68 so they have the pogo seat post.
The lemon peeler is a september 68 but it does not have the pogo.
Thanks for the interest it is fun to share nobody else I know understands.

Sweet score! Another "half screened" guard, bummer. 68's are my favorite year though, cant wait to see it cleaned up!

that "half-screen" is probably the only reason it survived where it did for so long
i know the pea pickers were introduced late in 68 scott (ive got a sept 68 campus green 5 speed frame) but i dont think ive ever seen a true 100% real deal pea picker to match the other 68's (white seat green stripe, fenderless front), just my opinion but if you do find a 68 pea, it was probably intended to be a 69 model. I have seen a couple with home-made (possibly even Pete-made) seats.

Excellent find! And a fair price... I don't think either party should be crying here. Sales of the small "collector" bikes have been down, but at the same time original ones are harder and harder to find, with the advent of these shows like Pawn Stars and 'Pickers.

The bike looks very original, correct as you called it on grips and rear tire. A repro RWL Stingray slik will look perfect on there... unless you can really find a "pie-crust" slik... good luck. Nothing wrong with using a nice repop.

The grips exist out there somewhere... probably find them for $20-25. The chrome all looks very saveable. Seat looks great. BE CAREFUL with the seat- they can and do crack in the widest part of the curve, and it's awfully disappointing... ask me how I know.

The grey cable sheath can be found to redo the cables- and fortunately pieces like the clamps and overload tube are there. The fork truss rods are slightly bent, but those should straighten out fine. A new chain will complete the bike- if you can get one from a Collegiate, so much the better, it'll be the right SEDIS chain, if you're concerned about such things. Any 3/32 derailleur chain will work fine and KMC's seem to work great for me.

As for the chainguard screen, I'd just buy a black decal and apply the STING-RAY part of it, then clearcoat the whole thing very lightly after it's been dry for a week... beyond that I wouldn't touch it.

I figure you know most of this stuff but I like to put it out there so others can learn about these legendary bikes too. Have fun with it!

Just wanted to post a picture after I got a chance to clean it up.
Still need to replace cables and grips .
Was able to save all the parts even the chain.
Looks like the only other non original part is the rear tire.It is a grass hopper slick.http://i960.photobucket.com/albums/ae82/lopo68/111_0074.jpg[/IMG
