somebody was dropping this off when I was pulling in to Goodwill. I can't seem to pinpoint the year. I'm guessing it is a 1986 or 87...any clue?

Re: 198? Diamondback Viper

That is one serious survivor.

You need to clean that puppy up quick.

I'll guess that it's an 86.

Re: 198? Diamondback Viper

based on the serial number and os-db.net I'm pretty sure it is an 86. i think the paint color is camouflage grey. it looks pretty much like this one with a chaingaurd and without the gussets by the headtube

i thought it was odd too, but it has an awesome, or should I say Radical decal that scream 80's

So far it looks like the only parts I will need are tires and a front reflector, but the rest looks like it will clean up nicely

Re: 198? Diamondback Viper

Cool bike...nice find!

Most complete BMX bikes came with chainguards new. That was just the first part that got tossed in the trash can.

Re: 1986 Diamondback Viper

After a closer look it appears that the chain is just like the two tone one shown above and it looks like I will be able to get it clean back to it's two tone glory. Any suggestions on how to get tiny rust specs off all the nooks and crannys without scrubbinh my fingers off? I was going to try and soak the chain in something. Maybe Viper Venom...

Re: 1986 Diamondback Viper

Great score! You'll find yourself singing "Rad" songs while cleaning it up, I guarantee it. :D

Re: 1986 Diamondback Viper - The overhaul begins

I didn't plan on starting this for a couple weeks, but i went into the garage to get a drink and it was calling me. I got it all torn down and ready to start the cleaning. I thought the chain was rusty, but it was just a little dirty and after a quick bath it is back to it's two tone glory.

It's nice to restore old bikes that were made from quality parts that last.

Not like today where a Chinese Sting Ray will have rusted hardware within the first few months stored indoors.
