For all those with cable-less multi speed hub experience.... Which one do you prefer? I read some "automatically" shift at a certain speed, that certainly is not what i want. So I guess that leaves "two speed kickbacks" ....Which one should I buy? Appearance, age and cost are of no issue here, just functionality and manual control of "gear" changes.... Thanks in advance.

red and yellow band have the same ratios and function the same the inter brake design is the only diff, they both work well imho, they have a normal pedal gear and a lower gear, blue bands are usually 28 spoke hole hubs and have a normal gear and an overdrive gear, were used alot on stinkrays, the new sa hub is an overdrive similar to the old blue band

5speed is correct about the bendix kickbacks. I have six of them and all work great. I would love a blueband with overdrive, they are harder to come by though. Haven't tried the modern ones. If you live in a very flat area I might try one with overdrive. Otherwise, the bendix red and yellow are awesome and fairly durable.

My favorite is the yellow band Bendix. But the Bendix kickbacks were made in the 60's, there aren't any new ones. A good one can be found though. The new kickbacks are either the Sturmey Archer or I believe Kt (I haven't seen or ridden one yet). The cog can be changed out on the new ones to adjust the ratio of your gears, or you can change the chain wheel on your bike to get a certain ratio. I prefer the kickbacks with coaster brake, but the Sturmey Archer comes in freewheel also. If cost is no issue, I'd find a mint condition yellow band. But for less, the Sturmey Archer would be my choice. I think the gear ratios on all of them are just about the same, except for the blue band Bendix. It was made for the 20" wheels of musclebikes, but would also work well if you put on a smaller chain wheel. I don't think you can change the cog on an old Bendix, they came in 18 teeth or 19 teeth, so a smaller chain wheel would put the gears in the same area as the others.

I ride the SRAM 2 speed now, actually I have both versions, freewheel and coaster brake, but they shift automatically when the hub reaches a certain rpm, by centrifugal mechanism. On my bikes, that around 8-10 mph. But they don't kickback, it shifts only automatically.

Cool, I never knew that. Or I knew it and forgot it.

I have the KT 2 speed kickback on my Double Barrel and I love it. the shifting is spot on and the brakes are terrific.I also have a couple of 60's vintage Sachs Torpedo 2 speed kickbacks and they also work pretty well. My buddy and fellow clubmember Clamdigger is an expert on the 2 speed Bendix, although I don't have one anymore.
