Alright! Darn Schwinn’s!

Man I hate doinking around with their wheels!!!!

I’m sizing up my speedster for some new tires (or wheels) and the tires on the bike don’t have an ISO size!!!

I’ve done a lot of reading online and it’s really only left me more confused!!!!

Does anyone know the ISO diameter (and clarification on S-5 and S-6 wheels) which appear to come in multiple diameters!???

i think I need ISO 547, but wanted to double check before I bought anything or got further advice!!!

Here’s what’s on the bike; I’d like to go a fuzz wider if possible:

First off to answer your ? the ISO size you are looking for is 547 (largest diameter 24" rim)
unfortunately very little variety of that size is available
37mm (1.45in) is the widest available
you would need to find 24" s7 rims which have an ISO of 520
47mm (1.85) is the widest that you can get on that rim however 24 x 1 3/4 tires are the only ones which are very uncommon
you would be best just finding standard 24" rims (507 ISO)
s5 and s6 only indicates the style of rim
both s5 and s6 used the same size of tire that is why the tires have 1 3/8 as well as 1 1/4 on them
s5 have a center ridge where the spokes attach
Hope this helps

Great info! Thanks for this: I was on the right track. This is fantastic data!

I recently built a couple of 24" bikes. The tires are all about the same if you can find them. That skinny 24" is the same size as a lot of wheelchairs, so they are pretty basic.

Here's a chart I use, it shows your tire as 7mm more in diameter than the usual 24 x 1 3/8ths. That's just enough so standard tires won't fit. My dad used to cuss up a storm after buying tires and one of our bikes had Schwinn rims.

547 mm / 24 x 1 1/4" / Schwinn 24 x 1 3/8" S-5/S-6 tires

32-54124 x 1-3/8 x 1-1/4600A
600 x 32A
1699
40-54024 x 1-3/8 x 1½1695
37-54024 x 1-3/824 x 1-3/81695
40-53424-1½1676
47-50724-2 x 1-3/424 x 1,75 x 21594

If the spokes are in good shape, you could lace in a set of 24 x 1.75 rims (507) using the same spokes. There will be 3/4" inch difference in radius of the wheel, 1.5" in diameter. So, the spokes will be too long so the excess can be ground off. The shop where I take my wheels to be trued usually trim the ends for me.
But new spokes aren't that much. Then you have a better selection of tires, 24 x 1.50 and wider.

thanks wildcat! I was looking at some of the wheel chair tires as options. I’m going to lay low for a few weeks and see if I can score a 24” cruiser on the cheap…. If not, I may just stay all Schwinn or maybe do one of the wheel chair offerings.
