i bought a brand new sturmey archer front drum brake over a year ago off of flea bay and put it back for a future build. well, i am upgrading the murray motobike to a 3.5hp briggs and thought it would be a perfect time for a little more braking on the ride!! so i unlaced the wheel, painted the rim and got the hub out and to my surprise the hub is a 27 hole hub! what the crap! what would a 27 hole even fit? any ideas? :?

I would not be surprised if it is a 28 hole hub, if it is really a 27 hole then it is a manufacturing defect and utterly useless. Is there maybe a hole missing on one side? Still even if you can drill the missing hole a 28 may not suit your needs at all.

I have to agree with CPO. Post some pics of both flanges. Being a former machinist, this has me curious.

here is the drum brake.

Duh! 36 hole hub!
18 holes on the large flange side and 9 speed lace holes on the small flange side, the speed lace holes each take two spokes.
Unless this was a joke (April fools) you are just fine.

What CPO said. Sometimes you'll see something the wrong way and it takes another pair of eyes to see it for what it really is. Good luck with your wheel build.

so, here is another stupid question. does it take shorter spokes on the brake side? as you can tell, i don't build my wheels. i have a friend of mine that laces them up for me.

Yes, they are shorter. You can figure the lengths needed using this spoke calculator: http://www.bikeschool.com/tools/spoke-length-calculator.

Eric, you have tons of information.

 Now I have to decide if I should use the calculator to try and install the rear hub on my bike or have a shop do it.
