28” Wheel Fork W/Holes

I have a couple of 28” wheel truss rod forks. They both have holes in both blades in lieu of slotted dropouts.

Anyway I’m using a modern 700c wheelset.
Front has 3/8” axle. One fork has been drilled out for 3/8”. I’m thinking of slotting the end of the fork blade to install the wheel.
Has anyone done this or is there a better way?

I’ve never done it, but seems rather straight forward to do.
I use ‘lawyer washers’ on some of my builds too.

Well since there wasn’t much response I went ahead and tried it myself. I enlargered the holes to fit 3/8” or 10mm axles.

I cut out the the slots with a Dremel tool.

I used a lawyer washer to determine the hole location.

Seemed to work OK.

When I faced a similar problem with my Flightliner, I narrowed the axle, rather than enlarging the drop out slot. Your method looks more durable.

I’ve filed flats on 3/8” axles previously to fit 5/16” slotted forks. Basically it just takes off the thread to make it work.

Your forks with holes on both sides are very old. A little newer they can have a hole on one side and the slot on the other. I always leave the holes, I never slot these old forks. If they aren't bent, the wheel is always properly aligned using the holes. The hub axle is further out on one side so the fork spreading is easier. You can build a wheel using yor preferred rim and a hub with the correct axle size. I have two boxes of vintage hubs i have cut out of ruined wheels for this purpose.
