Picked up a bike with 28inch wheels. Does anyone know when they went from wood to stee. Also if anyone knows has the best deal on tires that would be helpful. Thanks
if they're 28x 1 1/2 wood wheels on a true antique they're the 'single tube' style (like great big sew-ups) and quite expensive. maybe start at memory lane classics or see if anyone is selling some on the cabe website?
if it's just an old raleigh or something like that your local shop can get normal tires and tubes easily enough.....
Thanks for the replies it's a roamer with steel 28inch rims. I was just wondernig when they switched from wood to steel. I'm guessing the bike is 1920's maybe 30's possibly newer. Looks like niagra cycles has the 28 x1 1/2 tires for $27.00 a piece. Hope those are the right ones.
Romer used single tube tires.Coker tire has them.
700s are sometimes listed as 28s---not the same!
Wood and steel were both used very early---1900s wood was the most common but steel rims could be bought too.
around 1920 they started using the wood (steel)clad rims---they were wood rims with a very thin steel or tin covering.
Tufo tires has wide sew-ups that will fit the old wood rims---the red with black double diamond tread looks good/the spiked yellow /blue M/B type no so good.
There are two 28" tires that are common to find
ISO 622- 700c marked as a 28"
ISO 635- true 28"
Take one of your wheels to your LBS and they should be able to help, that is unless they are the sew-up type tires.
