Like I've always said, never look a gift horse in the mouth. I take whatever anyone offers me, so when a friend pulled up with 2 worn out 16" girls bikes today I happily said "Thank you" and unloaded them from his truck. Didn't look like much at first, but then I realized some potential in the parts.

The Cinderella bike on top is the real score. The best thing I can say about the Huffy on the bottom is that it's got a good chain, and I'm always trying to add to my single speed chain supply.

Check out these tires, 16x2.25. These things are fat and they were holding air when it was dropped off. So what am I going to do with some fat 16" tires?

I built this bike for my son with the intention of putting some decent white tires on, now I have them! They might end up brown/tan as I attempt to dye them. I will do a write up on the results.

Anytime I can get a 4 bolt stem, I count that a success. Now, look at the bar, sorry, but I'm a sucker for a low-rise BMX bar, and this one has a non-crimped center support, it's actually pretty beefy, and just as wide as the one I use on my cruiser. Not sure where, but I'll be using this.

I picked up my daughter from a friend's house after school earlier in the day, I'd never been in this neighborhood. Going to turn around in the cul-de-sac I saw a bike by a trash can, wheel removed, looked rough. I knocked on the door, nobody home. I came back later, the owner was on the porch, he welcomed me with a smile I asked about the bike (by now I knew it was a Trek "comfort bike") and he told me to take it. Sweet, when his wife came out, it happened that I know her, they are members of the church.

This bike is rough, the wheels are bent all up, looks like one was run over. The seat is crooked, shock is busted, lots of bent stuff, but the frame is straight, crank too. Good. This is a nice aluminum frame, might be what I need to make my single speed MTB.

Another good day for a cheapskate.

I'm with you on the 4 bolt stems, I've bought kids bikes from thrift stores just for the stem and then swapped out the stem and donated the original bike to the local bike co-op.

It's hard to see in the photos, but I noticed today when I walked past the bike, the cassette is interesting. The biggest gear is about 3-4 steps larger than the next smaller one, at first I thought it was just a spoke guard, but it has gear teeth. It says something like "Mega Drive" on the biggest sprocket. It's quite a jump, kinda like a granny low first gear or something. Odd.

Our hybreds have that large rear gear cog too.

Pretty neat to have a reallyt low gear, I guess with those 700 wheels it would help too.

I stripped the frame down, just a rear brake lever and cable, the bottom bracket, and seat post clamp. I want to build this as a single speed mountain bike with a set of 26" alloy Araya wheels I have, the only issue I see myself running into is the vertical dropouts, but I've seen SS mountain bikes with a chain tensioner on them, though I'd prefer to go without, it's probably better to have it anyway.

I have a freewheel that is about 16 or 17 tooth, so I need to pick a front gear that will give me something low, but not too low. Probably something I'll have to play around with. I want to add a home made rock ring and would like to find a cheap/free name brand front shock. If I can't I think I still have an old rigid front fork if my friend didn't get rid of it.

I just cracked a 7700 TREK frame similar to that one.. Note to self..Not made to withstand a little Air..LOL

Good luck with the build the frame looked good from that picture of that Link....I got that frame and it was bent on the seat stay so after a little bending I must have stressed it and then after an abusive ride it was toast..LOL Plenty of good parts to slap on a Trek 7000 that I have..!
