So I picked this up about a month ago. Just tore it down today. Its a 39 elgin frame and pre war Schwinn springer and I believe Schwinn fenders as well. Later bendix wheels and bars will probably stay, probably go no rack and switch out the stem and crank/chainwheel set. It appears to have been repaint long ago considering the Schwinn springer matches the frame paint. Looks like the original paint is gone underneath. Looks like bare metal where the paint is chipped. Question is would you guys leave the paint alone or repaint it?

It needs an older style chain ring, guard, and seat. The Schwinn parts go pretty well with the Elgin frame. Gary

Great job... Them fenders look awesome... I'm a big fan of Elgin bicycles. I'm also building one with similar forks good to hear it rides smooth...

Thanks man, yeah I love the way it rides. I have started to like a lot of the elgins too. They have some different and very cool frames. Right now I have 3 different ones. My next project is a 41 elgin. That one I will be repainting. It's has been repainted a flat black long ago and looks like crap. So not sure which way I will go on that one.

Maybe hit the the fender tips and steer head area with a thin coat of satin or flat off-white.:cool2:

Yeah I agree it would give it alittle more contrast if I did that. I feel like if I would have done that I would have wanted to paint the whole bike and that would have been whole lot more work. Haha. I wouldn't just want part of the bike with new paint.
