Most of you know that 3G Bikes out of Long Beach, California is one of our site supporters. Gary Silva, founder and owner of 3G Bikes has a long history in the bicycle industry and was the original founder of Phat Cycles and the inventor of flat foot frame geometry. Gary started 3G Bikes about 5 years ago with the desire to make comfortable, quality bikes that people would love to ride. As an owner of a Newport DLX 3 speed cruiser, I can attest to their success in achieving those goals. Another unique aspect that Gary brings to the table is his experience and connections with the bicycle manufacturing industry. He personally designs all of his bikes and has them manufactured to his specifications, not just having someone slap a badge on a preexisting frame set. From the grips to the seats to the cranks, it's all chosen for a reason.

I was talking with Gary last week about his bikes and he offered to send me one of his Broadway Platinum city bikes to try out and review...did I mention that Gary is a cool guy? The bike arrived this week and I was able to assemble it yesterday evening and take it for a quick spin around the neighborhood. As with the Newport DLX, this one did not disappoint. The bike has a lightweight aluminum frame with Gary's trademark tripod design. The frame is a larger framed bike and at 5'9" tall I found that I had to set the seat at a fairly low height to get on and off. Once on and riding you realize that your on a very quick and nimble bike that puts a big smile on your face. From the leather ergo seat to the rapid fire 8 speed shifter, the bike makes riding a true pleasure.

Here are some of the specs...

Frame: 6061 heat-treated aluminum
Fork: Hi tensile
Handlebars: 3G Clever (fully adjustable, custom fit)
Brakes: Tektro
Shifter: Shimano Rapid-Fire 8 speeds
Cranks: Pro – Wheel 3 Piece
Bottom bracket: Seal Bearings
Headset: Sealed Bearings
Rear Derailleur: Shimano Altus
Freewheel: Shimano
Hubs: Quando
Tires: 3G 700Cx45G
Rims: Alloy Rims
Frame size 18” with a sloping top tube

So if you're in the market for a city or hybrid style bike that is very comfortable and super fun to ride, you might want to consider the 3G Broadway Platinum. Gary really loves what we are doing here on the site and is paying attention to what we as Rat Rodders enjoy in the hobby. It's good to be able to show some love back to guys like this who have the ability to make an impact on the bicycle industry.

P.S. One funny side note. I was testing the bike out after assembly and one of my neighbors asked to take the bike for a spin. He just kept saying "WOW" and I wasn't sure that I'd be able to get him off of the thing.

Those handle bars and grips are cool. Lots of other cool details on the frame too.

Yeah, at first you see those bars and think...what the heck are those? :?

Once you see how adjustable they are you're saying...man, these are pretty cool. :D

Very cool features for a city/hybrid bike.
Love the bars and the twin top and twin down tubes.

Definitely not just a re-badged cookie cutter frame, I could look at the welds on those things all day long I think :) The bar set-up is pretty wild, what are the markers on there for and are they on both sides ?

Those bars would be great for fitting a bike and determine the best riding position. Or even to change the riding position for different riding styles. Obviously not for hardcore MTB riding.

the guy makes nice bikes, seen a bunch at a LBS before i found this forum, they are way cool... my only thing is the over branding everywhere, it stopped me from thinking about them too long...

By flipped do you mean so that it's facing the rider?

No, flip the riser stem to drop the crossbar lower ... just for looks sort of thing as I'm sure removing spacers and lowering the handlebar verticals could get you at the same height.

Aren't those Quando hubs?

The bike looks great, it's one of those bikes I'd love to ride, but wouldn't dare try one lest I see who crappy all my other bikes are.

The old "I dont know what I'm missing approach" ... I caved a while back but fun is still had on both sides.

Maybe not the perfect place for this question but:

What model bike is on the 3G website on the main screen on the showroom tab - Polished twin top tube single down tube?

That frame is sweet!

Thanks, Mike

Hey Mike,

From what Gary says, it's a prototype that he had made for himself.

Apparently he doe have plans to turn that into a production frame soon.
