Found this on CL a day or so ago and bantered back & forth with the guy and finally went and checked it out... Reads Typhoon on the Chainguard... well... you can see where it used to say it anyway... If I'm reading the serial #s right it's a 65 model... I hauled it home lubed up the chain, things seemed a bit stiff... took it for a ride anyway... realized quickly that the tall seat height and I weren't getting along... and then I realized the coaster brake wasn't working! either way...I'm digging it... just gotta learn how to work on the coaster brake now...

Opinions on what to do with it (after the brakes are fixed of course)... since the fenders are a lil dinged up... I almost feel obligated to remove em and flip the bars... seems to be a popular thing to do... but I've never been very popular...lol

Wow! You must be about as tall as the guy I bought this one from! I can't hardly bottom out the crank when I'm in the saddle of this one... but I'm not exactly verticaly gifted... lol!
I'll be sure to check those links out when I get in from work this evening... I'm looking forward to a test ride that doesn't involve dragging my feet to stop...

Well... I managed to get the hub disassembled... seemed alot like glue holding it all together. I've got all the pieces soaking in degreaser and I'll try to put it back together tomorrow... It already didn't stop... I really don't see me making it any worse.

Guess I need to break down the rest of the bearings and clean em and regrease while I'm at it. LOL!

Hey Aceuh,

Glad to here you dug into it.
Take some pics as your going along.
It's fun and good reference.
You could start a "build" thread too.

Sounds like the grease was really old if it looked like glue or varnish.
Good call about soaking the bearings too.
What kind of grease are you thinking? I've used white lithium the most successfully
But use whatever you are comfortable with
Here is when I took my RBB6 bike New Histop hub apart and a very old Bendix for comparison

That rebuild I used Teflon grease 90% and anti seize grease 10% but that's kinda radical though.

Good luck

I'm gonna pump some grease out of my gun in the shop to repack the bearings and grease the other internals... Generally always keep a Hi-temp grease of some kind or another in there... don't really remember what I put in it last. At this point anything is gonna be better then what I had. LOL!

Well... Some of the parts were seized together due to the grease being so stiff... I let the parts soak 3 days before trying to put it all back together... And I used just about every one of the diagrams that were shared in this thread. It went together the first time... and I checked it BEFORE I drove it! and it worked the first time! It might be a simple job for someone with experience... and I guess it wasn't really that bad... But I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a bit leery of it. It's always nice when a plan comes together! LOL!

Took it for a ride... came home and cleaned the chrome up a lil bit. ... lovin it!

Hey Aceuh,

Happy to here everything worked out.
Nice Job! Confidence builder :D
It more fun when you know how it works.

Try a Sturmey Archer 3 spd w/coaster or Sach's Torpedo Automatic (2 Speed non kickback)
The planetary gear sets are an interesting design.

Great to here it's back out on the road!
