One thing that helps if you're going to fit trim to a curved edge
is to 'pre-train' the donor material first. Basically you wrap it around something
or coil it up and leave it that way for a while. The cord will hold the curve all
by itself after awhile; at least the cheap vinyl stuff does.
I'm slowly chipping away at it; I went down a few dead-ends
with the tail light design but I've finally settled on something
(here's a hint) off an old Cadillac Deville.
The fenders have to be repainted, the Rustoleum is not sticking
to the primer and I'm fed up with it, so I have to strip the paint
off and wait for some reasonable weather to respray with
some other kind of paint, probably the Rustoleum 2X, which
is a lacquer, and much easier to work with.
I'm building the tank now out of layers of balsa wood; it will
be coated with fiberglass resin to seal it prior to painting.
Here's the tail lights, plus a shot of the LED assembly parts.
Trimmed and contoured
In place but no seals yet
Progress on the skirt/chain guard with decal
More accurate representation of actual colors
The tail light wiring is going to run on the inside surface of the fender behind a plastic shield,
There are three high power LEDs on each little circuit board; they are described as 'Cherry Red'
and should look less orange (more like incandescent) than typical LEDs, should be at least as
bright as the brake lights on a car. Each light assembly pulls about 5.7 watts, but will be pulsed
at either 3 Hz (stun  ) or 120 Hz (continuous) depending on mode
Taking your time is key. Too many of us rush things, and then we're never quite happy with the outcome. You should not in the slightest have any disappointments with the finished product that you'll end up with. Phenominal work!
Test fitting various parts, and fabricating the tank halves.
I'll post some close-ups of the tank later; the porthole is from an old PA
amplifier, and I have two of them. The centers will probably be transparent
red plexiglass with some sort of logo in the center... of course they will light up!
Careful you don't burn your shins on my dual rocket exhausts!
Still a lot more work to do. I'm not happy with the front lower fender brace, and
will likely make a combination brace/bumper.
I'm thinking of white tires too, what do you think?
