so about 2 weeks ago, i had to rebuild my sturmey archer aw 3speed hub (67') cuz that tiny cross piece where the axle end of the indicator/shifting chain screws into, split in half. luckily i had a doner 3speed hub (another s.a. aw) to get that little piece out of and had my wet weather commuter 3speed bike on the road... ready to get me thru the rain.
then yesterday, i decided to swap out the 39tooth chainring i had in it (with a 19 rear) with a 42tooth. after i had it all in and added a few links to my chain, i began to bolt down the rear wheel when the leftside wheel nut stripped (which is easy to do with this particular type of hub  ). so after work today, i brought in the wheel and after an hour of looking at more nuts than a planter's peanut packager, i left with no match. so i got haome and put the wheel back onto the bike with just the driveside nut on and would just let it sit till i could find a replacement wheel bolt from my other place in a few weeks. but then as i began to screw the indicator chain back into the hub... there was nothing to screw it into. so i just pulled out the driver and saw yet AGAIN, the tiny cross piece it screws into was broken in half. :x
i am very gentle with shifting my hubs and rode for years with sa hubs and never seen this same problem, and to happen twice in under a months time. hope i have that tiny cross piece somewhere cuz i can't find any in yreka. what a day. don't know if i can fix it, part it out or just bolt in an old schwinn bendix coaster rear.
