So, today I'm tooling down the road with my wife of 22 years (our anniversary) and I spot this thing on the top of a heap of junk on a pick-up truck. I hit the skids and find the shoulder. I back up into oncoming traffic going about 60 MPH. My bride thinks I've lost my mind, then when she sees what has my attention she KNOWS it. I park my truck and approach the guy and ask him about this bike.

I say "What are you doing with the bike"? He points over his steering wheel and replies "Taking It In there" (wherever "in there" is). I say "Will You Take Five Bucks For It"? He Says "Sure", and we untie it and take it down from the heap. When I throw it into my truck over comes this other dude, and he's mad! Seems that "In There" is a metal recycling place, and this guy is the owner. He lets me know (nicely) that what I'm doing is infringing on his business, and I'm setting myself up for charges if he wants to pursue it, and a hefty fine! YIKES!! Anyway, I apologized, told him I understood exactly where he was coming from, and assured him it would never happen again. I really had no idea that the place was a recycler, and I've driven by hundreds of times, but it really got me wondering just how many bikes get squished there annually.....YIKES!

Life Lesson....Don"t Mess With Other People's Livelihood......

I bought it as a "donor bike".
WALD front hub.
TAIWAN rear hub.
26 X 2.125 tires
Cool Handlebars
Ugly Seat
Sound Fenders

You cost him 3 cents worth of scrap metal. If he were smart, he would put all the bikes to the side and let you come by once a monthcand make some money from you. Unless he holds those bikes and has buyers come around already, then maybe you cost hime 5 or 10 bucks, but it wasn't his bike yet in the first place.

Tell him you would pay triple the cost of scrape metal..for bikes you like...you can come every Saturday

My gears are turning on this idea.......belieeeeeeeve me!

so u should have offered the "junk yard dog" another 5 bucks for it ...that would have been more than he would have got if it was junked ...u never know how ppl will react ...u make have gotten tons of bikes for 5 bucks if he had a pile of em inside tha scrap yard ...could have been a new connection ..

go back, tell how bad you feel and offer to buy a bike from him...then you can check out his stash..

I second this idea. Just ask him how much he gets for bikes like that and say hey I buy old bikes and I'll make it profitable for you if I can buy them from you. "Profitable" always perks the ears of scrapers.

Also I have the same bike but a men's it's a Murry Westport

Metal scrappers= most greedy "idiots" for some reason they wont let you have a simple bike , like last nights finds, I found two bikes a few houses apart and had three with me as I was getting last one one of them junker dudes pulls up and trys to actualy steal it from me. really? If I have to deal with that dude again his tires are getting it. in the end I locked them to a pole and took them home one by one. he seen me going home with one bike so he hurryed back only to be disspleased.
Lesson I think? First come, first served. I actualy have access to the biggest scrapyard here, they will hold all bikes for me if I ask. I havn't started yet though.

Yeah some people are just too stupid to know a good thing. Most the junkers around here are okay to deal with but you still got a few idiots.... at least the scrapyard will sell them.

I came across a gigantic (relative term for my town) scrap yard this week. There was a pick up truck with two bikes on the back. I'm like "Dang, they got two cool bikes out of there!" Just yesterday I thought about it again- they were parked facing toward the yard. The bikes were on the way in.

I need to stop by and make arrangements with them.

Even if their was a sign saying it it sounds like it wasn't on the sacrap places property, it was out infront, so it wouldn't matter if a sign was there or not. dealing in public areas anything goes lol

Yeah. It's legal to have a protest in front of a business. -With signs. Why wouldn't you be able to scam bikes in front?

It would hold a protest out front with signs saying "Bike Murderer".
That'll really get his panties in a wad.

Yeah if it's not on his property then he's just a sore looser.
As far as protesting goes I like this idea, When and where?, we'll have a biker rally bigger than Sturgis but not as noisy.....lol.

Just to clarify. I was on his property, I was in HIS parking lot. Around here, recyclers answer to a host of authorities. Hydraulic fluid, gear oil, motor oil, rubber, anti-freeze, etc need to be handled properly and accounted for. With that comes the expense of running a business....I respect that. I think I'll try the other route already discussed. I'm going to take a few pictures to him of bikes I'm interested in, and ask if he'll set them aside for me. Had the origional owner been out on the shoulder of the road when I approached him, the recycler wouldn't have had a dog in the fight. It's no big deal really...but it sure has spurred a discussion! :)

just nab em before they roll through the gates or talk to him about going through the completes if theyll set them aside. i can understand the guy getting steamed about hustlin bikes from the recyclers on his own property though
