found an abandoned bike that the city said i could have,it has a u type lock on it,anyone know how to get these apart without runing the bike?

There are many ways of doing it,
1. If it has a round key, take a BIC ink pen and remove the cap from the non writing end, then jam it in the key hole and twist it like a key.
2. If not a hacksaw or battery operated grinder will make quick work of it.
3. Also a car's scissor jack can force it open if you have enough space to get it in there.
4. oxy Acetylene torch also works.
5. If it's not through the frame you can remove the wheel and take the rest.
Look on youtube under U-lock picking and you'll find more videos than you can watch in a day. Lots of ways to get through it, just takes a little ingenuity.

A buddy locked his bike up then lost his keys.He called the cops to give them a head's that he would be cutting his bike lock (buisiest intersection in town)He then went to his bike, during rush hour, pulled a cordless reciprocating saw out of his backpack, put some safety glasses on,then ripped thru the u lock in a few seconds.People were all "look at that guy stealing that bike!" but no-one stopped him!
I could have just said use a cordless recip saw,but I like this story :D .Good luck with your new bike!

You should be able to get out of Lowe's or Home Depot with a cheap angle grinder and a couple of fiber discs for 40 bucks, should do a fair number of jobs before it craps out and you wonder how you managed without one for so long.
