I think some brakes on my beach cruisers , besides the coaster brakes would be a good idea. I'm thinking either caliper brakes or even discs would be good. A couple of mine have black rims so I know what the rims will look like after a short time. I see discs on a lot of mtn bikes that I would normally not buy but I might have to buy a couple for the brakes. Anybody on here added brakes ?

Disk brakes are a big add-on.
- New fork with disc tabs or a disc adapter
- Disc hubs, so new wheels or lace your own.
- Disc brake setup- brake lever, disc brake and rotor

Not sure that is all worth it for a single speed beach cruiser. If you were klunking downhill then may be worth it.

For a ballooner type front brake, I also like the Sturmey drum. You can get an old one and go period correct, or get a new one for function and it will still look OK. For lighter bike, I like the old Philco add-on fork brakes from the 30s-50s.

A front drum or disc would be the best bet, the best stopping power and no contact with the rim.
I added front brakes to my coaster for necessity, because of weight (mine) and some downhills here in the Philippines. And if the chain comes off or breaks, I'd have no brakes at all.
When I've used traditional hand brakes (caliper), I didn't get enough braking action, so I got a fork with the mounts (bosses) for the newer style (V-brakes), which gives me excellent braking, but not as good as a drum or disc brake, but cheaper and my rims aren't painted where the pads contact.
For the rear, you'd have to have the bosses welded on, or use a caliper if your brace has the hole to mount it. Using both brakes at the same time would give good stopping power.

I gotta +1 the drum brakes; very little muss & fuss; Sturmey-Archer makes a good dynamo hub with a drum; one part can do a lot, when it is a hub and a brake and a power-source for your lights....
Just add a short-pull lever, and you're good to go.
