I need to loosen the bearings slightly on my shimano 333 coaster hub. I want it to roll better, it just needs a little to be perfect. Is it just a matter of backing off the cone, or is more involved? I'd hate to damage it by doing it wrong.

That will work. If you don't have a flat wrench, you might want to get one. I would take the cones off, ONE SIDE AT A TIME so that the axle doesn't move, and clean + grease the bearings and races.

Thanks that answered my question.

I haven't read too many positives about these old Shimano hubs, so I'll just shoot a little lube in there and ride it til it gives out, then it's time for 7 or 8 speeds!

My Shimano 333 with a coaster brake has been flawless, i backed my cone nut off on the right side of the hub shot some oil in there and just tightned it enough that there was just a little slop in the axle, seems to work well.
