my rims have a flat spot and I need to find a new set. I have a rebuilt Bendix two speed hub that I plant to install with this change over. Would you go with black aluminum wheels or with chrome steel wheels? I plan to ride this bike on small trails with my family so I want what will give me the best functionality with out tanking away from what the bike is. If any body knows where to get a good deal on wheels I am open to suggestions.

Which rim has the flat spot? It can probably be trued out. If the flat spot is in the rear wheel, you could have the bendex hub laced in, and then once its trued up it should roll nice. Its also worth making sure the flat spot isn't in the tire and that the tire is beaded evenly on the rim.

I agree. Those wheels look nice on there. Bike shops charge about 20 bucks to true up a wheel, or try to sell you a new one. Those style wheels are hard to find in good shape, so I would have 2 speed laced up on that wheel. I also think the chrome looks good.

Ya I like the rims that are on it. I will take to the the local shop and see if they can straiten it up a bit, if they can. If not I think I will go chrome. I can buy steel wheels on line but I think that they will rust up quickly. I thought that chrome will stay better looking for a while.

just for fun and the experience, id try trueing it myself before taking it to the shop. you cant screw it up, and if it doesnt come out good, you were gonna take it there anyhow so you havent lost anything. only gained experience.

very good advice. I'd also go chrome rims. If the bike was black I'd say go red painted rims with whitewalls but the original paint is too nice to rat it up just yet.

One thing I would do though, get some red anodized spoke heads to spice it up and add some color to the wheels.

I am not bad at truing rims, and I usually do all of my work my self (mechanic by trade). but I do not do bikes for a living so may be some one better than me might know something I don't. Anodized spoke heads  nice idea!!! That will add some color, any other ideas?

Almost any steel rim put to hard use will have some minor dips. If it's not enough to give it the wobbles, I'd say do what you can with a spoke wrench and forget about it. Newer steel rims will cost as much as a whole cheap bike (another alternative), and probably won't be as good.

There's all kinds of things you can do, colored spoke heads, colored spokes, colored hubs, colored hoops, maybe spikes between the spokes drilled through the rim, round reflectors painted like 8-balls, mag rims, Different lacing patterns, twisting the spokes, the list is endless. I'd keep it subtle though. Simple, elegant, and classy.

I was playing with it earlier, I have it true as far as left to right wobble. And it dose ride fine but it goes a little up and down as it turns, bearing are nice and tight. I can't really see a flat spot per say but it is out of round. I would love to be able to keep these rims if I can, of course with added red anodized spoke heads  . So if it rides fine a little bit of an egg shape is ok? or is there and adjustment I am missing. Your right I will speed as much on a set of good rims as I would a downer bike.
