all about tires (and wheels)

I've bought several bikes lately and intend to buy more as long as I keep finding good deals. One thing I intend to avoid though ,is any weird size or weird types of wheels and tires.Reading an old bicycle repair manual I just dug out , I see wired on, glued on, and sewn (????) on tires. I want nothing to do with either style. It's aggravating enough to watch for the Schwinn bikes with "their own" wheels and tires.Any tips on what to look for and how to spot strange stuff?Thanks.
