A designer has come up with the Duetta, a two person bike that's not quite a tandem. Check out the article, including the video. While I think this would not work well for two full sized adults, I could see it working very well for an adult and a child (you can read more on that in my comment at the bottom of the article). Anyway, check it out, and share your thoughts.

Interesting concept, not nearly as cumbersome as a traditional tandem either. Someone with your skills could easily build one from vintage donors..... :)

o_OYou know, I don't even like passengers on a motorbike.:chicken: How come "Treehuggers" shows 2 young ladies riding that leg tangler without helmets, gloves, knee and shoulderpads?:crazy:

GET OFF MY LAWN!!:mad::rofl:

Ha. I saw the same write-up on treehugger. I think it's a pretty nicely executed concept, but I bet the actual appeal is to a pretty slender slice of the market. If I rode one, i'd be inclined to ride solo but sit on the rear saddle... Or, at least, give that position a try....

I'm not seeing a Tandem successor here, what with the compact frame and only one set of pedals-but I am seeing a strangely versatile machine lurking in that frame:

1) One seat in the forward seatpost, second post open-young adult to short adult commuter. The rear post can be used to secure a child seat or cargo pod behind the rider, or even...a custom Tandem frame comprised of a separate partial frame of seat post, rear wheel and pedals of its own (three wheel inline with two drives). The attachment points would likely be the rear dropouts, clamps on the rear triangle and the rear seatpost. A Tandem 'add-on' would expand the base bike from 'teen toy' to 'adult workhorse' pretty quickly...

2) Rear seat used with 'open' front seatpost-a low, semi-recumbent commuter or cruiser for taller adult riders. The front tube could handle a child seat or small cargo pod as long as the designers took the rider's pedal stroke into account and went tall instead of wide...

Rats-now i'm wishing they made a Folding version-can you imagine a dual-tube bike with clamps in the middle, loosen one screw to fold, two to separate, with a reinforcing tube strong enough to take a little weight of its own...loosen two screws and s-t-r-e-t-c-h the frame out between 1 and 9 inches? With the right accessories available, a Folding variant of this could be the Ultimate Lego Bike, grab a wrench, choose your configuration today and be on your way in 15 minutes or less-

(let's build one)

Er, What?

(we can build one of those)

Oh it's you, Inner Child. Listen, we-

(we've got wheels we've got tubes we've got MAAP and I believe in you)

Our workshop is a picnic table. It is February. It is 10F outside right now, and even if I were willing to die of hypothermia the paint will be a solid mass in the can and clumps on the brush...most importantly it is too cold for the Bronze to flow,and without that we have nothing, okay? Come on, i'm making sense here...

( :cry::cry::cry:)

Oh for...you know, there's no reason we couldn't grab a notebook and do some design theory to keep us busy, and then maybe see what late March looks like-and i'm pretty sure i'd want to do a project or two to hone my meager Brazing skills before I tackle something this odd-

( :) )

Also, those down tubes would change the rake every time they were adjusted, so either a single gigantic crossbar or twin horizontal tubes would be needed, it's still a 20" wheel so access would still be good...

( :dance2::dance2::dance2: )

Sorry, this Cabin Fever is really getting to me-at least I have time to finish this Ukulele and then learn a few basic chords on it-

( :arghh::arghh::arghh::arghh: )

Oh quiet, you.

hmmmm....interesting idea. I don't think I would ride it with another dude though...Not that there's anything wrong with that...;-)

My brother has a Worksman side by side and its a blast to cruise on with 2 adults. The 2 independent drivetrains make that real easy to pedal together. Shared crank deal looks like it would be awkward.
