See what you guys made me do. Just happen to find this site a month ago, and you got me looking behind every garage and barn, knocking on doors, and wearing out my fingers perusing Cl every other hour. After checking on a number of bikes, I found these in the attic of my local Schwinn dealer. I am not sure of years or models so you will have to help me out there. The Schwinn will get painted, tires and cleaned up. It is the old kick back two speed. The Columbia will either stay like it is (with some cleaning) or maybe a restoration this winter. Always enjoy your ideas and opinions guys. Thanks again the site for getting me into another mess of trouble with another hobby! Brian (Holland, MI )

Remember, where there is a collector, there is always a BOSS! that says when you have too much and when to get rid of it. Have fun with your new found illness. This is an illness you can't call in to work with.

Congrats, you are eternally ill, there is absolutely no cure known to man. You'll find that it will only get stronger. Nice finds, I really like the Columbia.

Welcome.

Make sure the Boss isn't looking over your shoulder reading this.

Keep 3 crappy bikes. Warped wheels, flat tires, just plain junk. But keep them shiny and get any parts off them you want. These are the bikes that will "go away" when the Boss says get rid of some bikes. Make them disappear and show off the empty space where they were.

Then you can remind the Boss of your sacrifice when the next good bike comes along.

As for the Schwinn, the serial number should be on the left dropout. Post it and I can tell you what year, probably early 60's.

 Nice finds!! The K'zoo, Ann Arbor and G.R. craigslist ususlly have some nice bikes...But becareful on price...It seems that most folks nowadays know how desireable these old bikes are and price 'em accordingly...But good deals can be found. Welcome btw... :)

WIldcat, here are the numbers I found by the left dropout on the black Schwinn. C42680. I have searched all over the Columbia but haven't located any numbers yet but there is a lot of dirt and rust to work off. The tires and grips are original I think. The grips are Columbia's and the tires say that they are ALLSTATE Premiers only on one side of the tire. Replacing the Schwinn tires this week with some whitewalls and I will probably repaint the wheels back to the off white and maybe try my hand at pinstripping. I hope to have both the Schwinn and my old 1950 Chevy Panel truck back on the road in a few weeks. Should make a good photo opp together. Brian

That's one of those numbers that could be 52, 53. 0r 57. Are you sure there aren't 6 digits, that would make it March 64.

Is there another digit or letter before the C?

If that is the whole number you listed, then the only sure way would be to remove the cranks and read the 2 digit number in the middle of the crank.

The 2speed automatic hub was made from 60 to 69. It may not be original to the bike though. Is the front rim identical?

made in June of 1952,nice score!!Silly newbie dont you know your first big scores go to the guys here on RRB?Just send me the neck and we"ll be even!!haha

Yep, your right. I went back down the basement with a flashlight this time, and some grease covered the last number C426806. Thanks, Brian.

Junkie, you mean the Columbia was June of '52? Geez, maybe my folks got it for my birthday that year! Wildcat, Couldn't tell you about the front hub, because I don't know enough yet but I keep seeing orange paint under the black. Primer? Repainted?

Thanks.

It looks like both wheels came with the bike, the rust on the white paint looks even.

I'm fairly sure the hubs are chrome under the dirt and paint, except for the yellow or red stripes on the rear hub.
