I really like the look of the mid-to-late 1950's JC Higgins (Murray made) fender skirts/skirt guards, and got to thinking that I'd like to put some on a bicycle of mine in the future. It's a 26 inch boy's 1950's bicycle, a Snyder made Hawthorne, and it has a frame with a rear triangle setup VERY similar to a Murray made frame of the same size and year. The chainguard is very close in physical size to the corresponding JCH guard... Since skirt guards for Murray frames of the same frame style, size and period are more readily available (and better looking) than any "Hawthorne" skirts, I'd definitely go with Higgins guards. So my question is, then, has anyone put Murray made JC Higgins skirt guard on other frames of the same style and period, and did it require an excessive amount of modification?

I am putting some on the bike I am currently building. Its an X-53 frame so the seat stays are pretty close to the same loaction as the higgins frame. The Higgins skirt guards mount to a cutout in the fender so if you don't have the correct rear fender then you will need to cut the one you plan on using. I will post some pics of how I mounted mine.

COOL! X-53 frames are Murray made if I'm not mistaken, so it should line up perfectly, right? I think the X-53 has the same frame as Murray made JCH jet-flo's, and I have seen skirts on those frames. Please do post pictures of what you did to mount the skirts, I'm sure they look awesome on an x-53 frame, and the mounting setup of yours should be a very useful reference to me in the future. I'm not worried about modifying my fender- it's already been "bobbed" pretty good :D and it's not really custom to me until it has been cut. Thanks for the reply.
