not quite what i was looking for jon. the one im talking about sort of matched the stingray chrome "bumpers" accessories... it could be that i just dont know what im talking about

CCR, try getting ahold of John Brain. He has alot of old sissy bars and even more history about them. He's alway on the look out for all the different types. If he doesn't have any knowledge of one, he'll definitely be thankful for hearing about it! Also try Bicycle Don at Petri and sons. He's got a whole bunch of old Schwinn stuff and knowledge. Both of these guys might know or have one even if it is not a Schwinn product.

You can contact Brain at BR&K
Don at [email protected]
Hope this helps,
Chainy

Thanks chainy and NE, no thanks to jon though

the Bill Matthews stuff is what i was looking for, never seen the headers before now though :!: :!: :!:

looks like Brain already has the info on what i was looking for. but I may go ahead and break down and ask Brain as a last resort if I cant find a pic of one on a bike, looking to see how those mounted (clamps or axle mounted). would like to get one if I can mate it to a suspension sissy. looks like axle mounts but ya never know looking at a drawing of one.

I know Ive seen at least one is the FS ads here but cant find it.

Ok here we go, this is my latest mod to the bfk (makes it so much more confortable) than the aftermarket shock sissybar, it was an easy mod to adapt this bar to the shocks, just a matter of drilling the holes to match the original bar for the pins to secure the springs. And here's one of the liscence plates that Fireproof made (thanks Mark)

As far as I know, Schwinn never sold these tall bars.

They were in the catalogs of stores like Montgomery Wards, Sears, and Kmart. I have a few catalog page scans, that I can dig up.

They almost all mount with the flattened bottom ends with three holes, like a very early Persons bar but not like a later Schwinn bar.

The "shock" setup like GSC has, is exclusive to the Krates. Nice adaptation of that thing btw.

There were some variations at the top seat mounts- some Columbias used bar clamps up top, with a bolt to a tab on the seat. So to change height, you loosen the top screws and slide the whole seat up and down the sissy bar- no cross drilled holes, just round bar the entire length of the thing.

Good luck finding one that is in good shape at a reasonable price though.

Is this what you are looking for? They came off a newer sissy bar. I mounted differently so this are just laying around. They are yours if you want them.

nah, i was wanting a pic to see how those "accessory" sissy bars mounted, i thought it used those clamps but it doesnt, the bar mounts to the axle. thanks for the offer though cman !!!

Yep, NLCTVW is right. Everyone I've talked to has told me that Schwinn mever made tall sissybars. They were all aftermarket. Petris has a super nice stainless steel high sissy. It's somewheres around 5 to 6 foot tall. Good quality cost around $60 to 70 dollars but is well worth it! you could weld in the ring to accomplish that look.

The bar I adapted would have used the clamp mount on the frame, like the clamps that mount to the seat.

yeah, schwinn outsourced a lot of their stuff, i thought i had seen the sissy bar as an accessory in their catalog but im guessing i just saw a magazine ad with the parts on a stingray instead. i really want to get the right seat height so stainless may be the way to go to add some height and polish it out :) thanks chainy

Schwinn didn't make tall sissy bars (or even most components they used) but they did sell them. Schwinn had those Bill Matthews accesories in their catalog, but didn't list them as Bill Matthews stuff, so a lot of people think they were made by Schwinn.Schwinn wouldn't put a big sissy bar on thier bikes but they allowed them to be sold at Schwinn dealerships. There was a lot of different clamping methods, but most aftermarket sissybars seem to have the flattened ends with the 3 or more holes holes. A lot were mounted with those 5/8 clamps too.

That bike rod and custom history article by John Brain has a lot of this information but it only goes to 1967 right now, and he will answer questions if you email him. he seems very nice about answering stuff if he knows the answer. I asked him about this stuff here
