anyone painted over chrome

I have some old chrome handle bars can you paint over them I guess you might need to prep them someway thanks.

I've painted over a couple chrome handlebars. I roughed them up with a flap disc on my angle grinder before spraying. I think I've only used a flat paint. Not a show finish but good enough for me. Just touch up if gets scratched.

I agree, I also spray on a coat of etching primer before color.

Yeah. Sand with 40 grit then switch to 80 after its all roughed. Then I use dp90(ppgs epoxy primer.) No idea what DuPont, Sikkens, Matrix, or any other brands names are though. All the shops I worked at were PPG only. Well, except Miracle decades ago, and you don't want to use anything they were.

I scuff with 60 grit then use etching primer before paint.
With handlebars or one piece cranks you have to be careful installing them,if you scratch them just do a little touch up.

Awesome guys I figured just a rough up to the metal would work I always use a tack cloth too thanks.

Yeah, what they said, but don't skip the etching primer. IT makes a ton of difference.

FWIW, a lot of higher-end road bikes from the 70s and early-80s came paint-over-chrome, straight from the factory, and the finish always looked great on those, so it's very possible to get a pro finish, if you do this right.

Wipe chrome with solvent. Spray with Plastic Primer. Let cure. Apply color coat. Let cure. Clear coat optional.

I've never seen a paint stripper that will remove chrome plating,I don't think it's possible. If you find one that will let us know.

Same here but my buddy paints and strips air planes you should see the paint on a 25 year old airplane it falls off it's krazy how it comes off I'm going to see what happens.
