Yeah. Sand with 40 grit then switch to 80 after its all roughed. Then I use dp90(ppgs epoxy primer.) No idea what DuPont, Sikkens, Matrix, or any other brands names are though. All the shops I worked at were PPG only. Well, except Miracle decades ago, and you don't want to use anything they were.
 
I scuff with 60 grit then use etching primer before paint.
With handlebars or one piece cranks you have to be careful installing them,if you scratch them just do a little touch up.
 
Yeah, what they said, but don't skip the etching primer. IT makes a ton of difference.

FWIW, a lot of higher-end road bikes from the 70s and early-80s came paint-over-chrome, straight from the factory, and the finish always looked great on those, so it's very possible to get a pro finish, if you do this right. :thumbsup:
 
I wondered if paint stripper will remove chrome worth a try.

I've never seen a paint stripper that will remove chrome plating,I don't think it's possible. If you find one that will let us know.
