Just got home from a great 3 week vacation in the Philippines. I bought 2 sets of hubs with band brakes, one gold and one blue, from a bike shop in Olongapo City, 30 bucks total. I had one of these back in the 80's when I was in the Navy. That was an old Varsity I converted to 5 speed with 1.75 z-rims, band brake, and Bmx handlebars. It was stolen in Imperial Beach right before I transferred to Florida. I have never seen band brakes over here, so this was a priority to get at least one. Now I plan to build my first set of wheels.

I hope every thing is loose on them hubs.. Thats a sweet score..I to would like to see them on a finished bike..Good luck with the wheel build..What style of bike are you going to build ?

They use these brakes on all the work bikes, those with sidecars, big baskets, and trikes. They don't work when you roll backwards, maybe that's why they aren't over here in the states.

I plan on making a big beer bike. The wheel building will be the biggest challenge, I'll try to do it all without going to the lbs to have them trued up. The wheel building section on this site will be my guide.
