How many people know where there is bike honey holes but cant get to the bikes for one reason or another, Ive got one but have to wait for the owner to have time to let me in and let me know what bikes i can have. its so hard not to contact them and ask them when they might have time to do it, I dont want them to change their minds and say nah I think were just going to keep them.

Sometimes it can be a fine line...

There are 2 places near me with huge piles of bikes, mostly late 50's & 60's stuff, nothing very exotic. I inquired over the summer, got the whole "let me think about it and I'll get back to you" story.

Consider this, would you be more bummed out if you didn't follow up a few more times and found out later the went to someone or somewhere (scrap) else?

good luck!

I think you need to be persistant, but not overly so. Twice in the past I have managed to purchase bikes after several years of asking every 3 or 4 months. I don't know if they just got tired of me asking or if they finally decided they should sell.

old man 2 blocks away had a bike i wanted and he would not sell it. i noticed he was into harleys, so i went home and gathered up a box of harley take off parts that i had in the attic. i went back and asked him if he would be interested in a trade. man he jumped all over it. some people dont really care about money.even if they look like they need it.

Money Talks.
being unemployed makes that a little hard right now, and Im trying to keep the cost down since most of the bikes will be cleaned up and resold to people that cant afford to go buy new bikes.

you got to keep at it but dont get to crazy dont try to low ball them or hound them once i had an older couple that had a few old bikes i brought them by produce from time to time mentioned about how i would like to buy the old bikes a few month later. bingo i have them in my collection now. but you will need some money too.....

I understand this, I am always low on cash, but I kind of doubt you'll walk into a "honey hole" empty handed and come out with something. You just need to let them know that you are serious and have cash in hand, even if it's not much, they need to realize that you are there to buy and ready to buy that day, not just browse through their stuff and leave.

I lived in a small town for a while. Around the corner from me by a dairy farm was a fairly nice 58 chevy impala. It sat there for a couple years . My middle brother , who is Steves father called me one day and said he was coming to my house and we were going to go ask them what they wanted for the car. He came over and we drove around the corner where the car was normally parked and there was a big dead spot in the grass with the rest of it all grown up 4 feet tall. We knocked on the door and a older lady came out. We asked where the car was . She told us that a guy had come by the day before and she gave it to him to get rid of it.    I'm not sure my brother has ever forgotten that deal.

I have run through this scenario quite a few times over the decades (bicycles, motorcycles, and cars). Usually you are not the first on the scene. Some of these sites are well known and the owners are attention types. Selling off their good stuff brings and end to the thrill.

I have too and as far as i know i am one of the first to see the rusty ones (to me its a honey hole). Was there once and seen the bikes but the woman wasnt home and the hubby was clueless on where and what all bikes went so im just waiting for her to get back with me on a time to go down there. just going crazy waiting.

i found a few honey holes in my day. i found a big pile of early 80's bmx parts. with 2 24 inch murry bmx bikes. it was at a house that burned down. the locale tweekers had a field day with that place. but i guess no one ever looked behind the back fence. because all those bmx parts sat there for about 3 years after the fire. the second pile i got when a horder left a yard full of junk. and there was a hugh pile of bikes, nothing special but man did i make a lot of custom stretched bikes out of that pile. and the 3rd was by chance. i would ever once in a wile stop by and talk to this guy about his 1960 el camino he had sitting. i saw a hugh pile of bikes and hit him up and he said they were his son's bikes so i never asked about the bikes again. then the last time i saw to to see if he hit realty on that el camino. and he asked me if i still wanted them i said not really- but i would take them if cheap. he said if you get them out right now i could just have them. i had to get a flat bed tow truck to bring it all home.

There's an old guy near here that has several hundred bikes. He buys and buys but won't sell anything. Money doesn't matter. He doesn't ride them, or restore them, he's just a hoarder. I got really frustrated with him one day when he called me wanting a Schwinn balloon front fender. He wouldn't do a trade for anything I needed and wanted to give me next to nothing for my fender. I snapped and told him he can keep all his precious parts and that when he finally takes a dirt knap I'd buy whatever of his bike stuff I wanted for 10-cents on the dollar at the auction his widow will be having. :p He hasn't called me since then for some reason. I read the obits every day.

I used to cruise around and see what I can see over fences when I was driving truck ,now all I can do is ride real slow on my bike looking thru fence cracks, now all I find is people growing WEED!!!!

Tall bike conquers fences than any big truck I've even been in, plus people find it much friendlier than a motor vehicle.

I thought about that, but you have to remember that there is a lot of people using "medicinal marijuana" I would probably freak out a few people dressed like an Elf floating along the top of they're fence

So i have had a guys number for 2 months now. Last time we talked I got the feeling he couldn't stand me. I waited and waited to contact him about a barn FULL TO THE BRIM - like stacks of frames + parts up to just below the ceiling - FULL! Last night I text him and he couldn't be happier to show me the stuff. SUNDAY SUNDAY SUNDAY its gonna be on. So contact'em and be polite, persistent & bring cash. That's my two pennies about it.

Elf suit is optional, but it might help break the ice with the pot heads and keep them from being so paranoid.
