I got given this among a load of other bikes a month or so ago. I wanted to build a klunker for a while so this will be the victim.

The bottom bracket is shot, as it stem bearings so while I stripped it down its going for powdercoat, colour to be revealed...

Also built one of these, the first I have laced myself

Then I won these on ebay because the stem had grinder cuts in it, just so happens the bars match the rims.

Just to get off track here, I was wondering if those Old Raleigh forks are a week point on the bike? To make it look like a Klunker, add some trusses to the forks. And add some strength to the front end.
 
Yeah, the kink in the forks is sposed to be a weak spot, I have sent them off for powdercoat anyway as it hasn't cost me anything, but I think I'm gonna go springer forks up front, or 26" BMX forks

Good idea; might as well get the new headset now.
 
I'm basically waiting on the frame, powdercoater is being slooooooow! Might just go for a blasted frame at this rate

PS- most springers will fold before that stock fork will. Tubular 26" bmx-type fork or rigid mtb fork will be your best bet if you actually plan on riding trails.

Aye I did think that. I'm going off the idea of a springer on this, I already have one on my Monark. Am thinking of revamping the rear end too now as it unbolts...
 
Most springer are meant for road ridding and not off on the back trails. The modern re-pop of the Schwinn style springer has a flaw in that the pivot pin/bolt goes through the fork leg. Unlike the originals which has a lug welded or brazed to the back of the leg. The other weakness even the originals had was side force flexing and flexing between the fork legs and struts.

Both of these can be fixed if you weld braces in like the girder forks had. By tying the struts together and tying them to the fork legs you improve them 100%. You also need to braze a sleeve into the pivot bolt hole.
