Cable to Barrel ?

I don't know the proper term but I have had this problem come up before, what is the deal about locking the cable so that the three speed barrelnut stays on the cable, I have rigged stuff up before (it wasn't pretty) so I dont have hot lead floating around is there cable ends that are sold somewhere that will fit in the barrel ?

If Im following ya, there are short "jumper" cables that connect cable to cable....

I'm really lost now , maybe I can try to explain a little better , the barrel nut I am refering to screws onto the chain that comes out of the three speed hub and holds the cable.
