I have a rear drum break hub that accepts thread on cassettes. The biggest gear I can find for this set up is a 34 tooth meggarange. I have several good used free hub cassettes. Is there any way that the 34 can be replaced with a 36 or 40 tooth? I don't mind drilling out pins, grindIng or welding and rehardening the cogs. Any one done this or any ideas? The big jump between 6 and 7th gear would be more pronounced on the Meggarange but I could live with it. I have a Meggarange on two of my mountain bikes and the big drop in gearing is annoying but better than the alternative high gearing. It will be for a klunker so the rear derailleur mount will have to be made to accommodate the larger gear.

I doubt you will find anything larger than Shimano's Mega Freewheel. And modifying a cog from a cassette(freehub) would probably not work well due to making sure everything is round and centered. Can you change one of the front chainrings to achieve a lower gear?

I'll be running a 24 tooth narrow wide 64mm bcd, may have to use spacers for chain line. I live and ride on the Margi Gesic race trails. If you haven't read about the race the winner declared it toughest single day mb race in the
. Very steep hill after hill. I have a 26er with a 20 tooth front and 40 tooth rear and spin out on some of the rocks and roots an the steepest tight switch backs.
I am rinning 2.35 tires but the few who can make the top use 40 tooth fat bikes or plus bikes. Of course I won't be riding a klunker on the steepest trails but I have pushed klunkers on some of them. Typically we ride short punchy strep hill after steep hill. Typical 10 - 12 miles with a 1000 feet of climb for the over 60 crowd. I need the lowest gearing available but will pronably have to settle for 24 x 32 with 26 inch tires.

Looks like a grueling race! Endurance racing is whole group of crazy people that put their body to the test.

I might still try and disassemble a cassette and a free hub gear cluster and see if the bigger sprocket from the free hub can be machined to replace the large Magarange gear. It's been a few years since I removed the cogs from a screw on freewheel so I don't remember much about it.
I'll have to think about it. 24 X 34 with 26 inch wheels is geared a little higher than the 29ers from 4 years ago. I like 13 gear inches and the 24 x 34 would be about 17. If I could get 15 I could ride most of our easier trails on a klunker.
