Waiting on a chain to show up, and realized I don't have a locknut for the crank with fine enough threads in my parts drawer. For the time being, the skip-tooth sprocket has been replaced by the one from Cherry Mk.I, and everything spins well.

I want to test the rear wheel before I tear it down to clean/refinish the Bendix 2 speed hub. If it's shot, I will replace it with something that works.

It used to not be such a big deal to fall back to page two, but when there are only two pages...

I wrapped Cherry in a YBN chain, and installed the Bendix shifter. After yanking my lever a couple of times and turning her crank, it looks like the 2 speed hub is working pretty well, though I wouldn't trust these brakes down any big descents.
I plan to pull the rear wheel apart, and re-lace with stainless spokes to match the front. Replacing the rear hoop with a shinier 28H unit that I have seems like a good idea while I'm at it.

I’ve never delved into tearing wheels down or building them. What makes a coaster brake lose its effectiveness?

The brake shoes wear down, and the springs lose tension over time, mostly. This hub is about 75 years old, so it's not entirely unexpected.

That one is actually a leather Selle Anatomica saddle. This one is the newer, heavier duty one with the aluminum frame, for us clydesdales.16882494316983733114314463229768.jpg

Great details! Looking good!

Slow going, but I'm pretty close to complete. Made up a new bracket and mounted the chain guard, then I moved the crash bars back, and mounted them to the holes where the drop stand is supposed to bolt up. If I locate a 24" drop stand in the next week or so, I may ditch the crash bars in favor of that.

Also added the Thompson grips and vintage red/white/black Excel pedals today.

Although I went to the expense of buying new spokes and nipples with the idea of re-lacing the rear wheel for looks, I had decided to skip that step - until I went to air up the back tire and saw the hack job somebody did when it was built:

So now I will take it home and re-lace and true both wheels in between working from home.

I dig those valve caps as well!

I found them in a parts bucket years ago. My guess is that they were originally finials/nuts for securing a lampshade, and re-tapped to thread onto Schraeder valves.
Awesome! I like to use unique pencil toppers from time to time. Used these fez monkeys on my Hawthorne.
