Noticing lately that someone will offer something up for sale, be it a collection of parts or a bike they are parting out and everyone responds by saying that they PMed that person. I've been guilty of this myself. I'm thinking that people need to state what part or parts that they have PMed the person about. This way five people are not all jumping on the same thing. On other bike forums I've been to it's usually called "The Dibs Rule." The only problem with this rule is that people have a tendency to get a little over excited when stuff pops up for sale and then they change their mind or they just back out of the deal.

Don't claim dibs on something unless you really plan to buy it.

Thank you, my sentiments exactly. I discussed this with another RRB member that is also a personal friend and he did not agree which is why I haven't said anything. But now that you've posted it I can say how frustrating it is when someone lists multiple items for sale but you have no idea what has been reserved (dibs) unless evryone states what part they PM'ed about. It's a practice I always use and I know a lot of others do also, and I appreciate that.

I wish sellers would have to post their location. Makes it easier to decide if you want to pursue it if it needs to be shipped, say from coast to coast. $20 part, verses $40 shipping, not really worth it. Dean

the dibs rule looks great on paper, but with members all over the world, it don't work out so well in real life.
when selling an item, its gonna be me that desides who i sell it to
and not the person who calls "dibs"

you can call dibs till your blue in the face, and its not gonna change my mind.
things like location, best offers, previously pleasent or unpleasant dealings and trades are things i'll consider long before dibs.

i think if a dibs rule is put into play, theres gonna be a lot of "i called shot gun first " kinda conversations. a lot of hurt feelings and general dissention in the ranks.

on top of a lot of pissy sellers when the dibbers change thier minds. (you know its gonna happen)
dibs is a stake we need not drive into the heart of rrb.

At the very least people need to state what part they are interested in....that was my point of the post.

well most usually post theres a pm sent.
if we post "pm sent about.............." it should cover most basis. it will give all of us an idea of interest in set item.
the sellers should also be responsible for posting the item as sold or removing the post.

i understand the desire to make things run smoother, but is it a good idea?
i wonder how many friendships on this board started with a private pm about a part/bike that had long since been sold off. some of which might never had happened if they knew the item was already sold. :)
ya know what they say steve. don't fix it if it ain't broken.
broken and rrb are not terms i use together, this place rocks
just food for thought.

Okay...I'm trying hard to understand here...you're thinking that stating what part you're interested in on a classified ad is not a good idea?

I guess if someone's that concerned about confidentiality they shouldn't post "PM Sent" at all....just send the guy a PM. :D

I'm starting to feel like I'm in a conversation about a 90s model Haro again...ha ha!

my bad, it is a good idea.

that was just my round about way of saying, i've devoloped friendships here asking about items that had long since sold. friendships i value. it never seemed an issue to me.
if conversing with considerate rrb peeps via private messages is the worst i have to deal with to find out if a part/bike is available.
well, it cant be all bad. :D  :D

what ever you decide, i vote yes :)

I think posting a "PM'd you about this particular part" and your location in your profile are good ideas.

Whether you buy/sell or not I think everyone should put a location in their profile. If you're worried someone will find you from the location in your profile and steal your bikes than at least just put the country/part of the country your in.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding your personal selling choices. I have a RRB friend that lives in Puerto Rico and is frequently unable to purchase parts from certain RRB members because of his location. I have become his middle man with RRB, The Cabe, Ebay and Craig's List because of his geography. Fortunately there are many members that see no difference in selling to him as compared to selling to someone stateside and will attest to his honesty and integrity as a buyer. He has a US Zip Code just like I do and the USPS ships to PR relatively reasonable yet as many times as he has successfully purchased an item on RRB he has been turned down for no apparant reason. If the listing states no shipping to PR it's not persued but otherwise I feel he should be treated like any other potential buyer. No one has ever said to him that they pick and choose who they are going to sell to. Yes, this is any person's right to sell to who they want but this approach seems akind to someone not selling an item to me for the asking price because the next person in line offered him more money. I would say not everything is hunky dorry in RRB Land. Robert

I think what Steve is saying is, If I have a bike for sale or part out and someone wants the grips you should say (PM sent on grips).
But if someone has a bike for sale or part out and you only want to sell for top dollar, you should say To the highest bidder(this is not E-bay this a friendly hobby exchange). You scratch my back and I'll scratch yours.

I believe what Randy is saying if you have something for sale and I'm looking for that part, is it worth the asking price plus shipping if it cost more to ship than it cost buying it.

So I just bought a bike from John for $30 and then I find out John lives in L.A. CA. and it going to cost me $90 to ship it to me in KC Mo. Will I back out? maybe if it's just a everyday. So if I knew he's location before I PMed him I would have save his time and my and a lot of frustration.

Just my two cents

i think the "dibs" rule works great IF theres a pic, a price and you know how much shipping is (or at least the sellers location).

its not any more painful to type "PM sent on the frame" instead of "PM sent" and clears up whats been hit on for other buyers who may want something else, i think the sellers here would want that anyway.

perhaps you are misunderstanding my personal selling choices.

so you list an item and end up having 2 interested parties. ones a close friend the other a total stranger.
who would you sell to? and if the total stranger called dibs, who would you sell to?

same item for sale, 2 interested parties. both of which you've already delt with.
one party was a pain in the arse (took a long time to get payed, nothing but complaining) the other a real treat to deal with.

who do you sell to? and what about if the pain in the arse called dibs?

same item, 2 interested parties.one has racial slang (offensive to your race)in both the login name and email address?
who do you sell to
what about if the race hater called dibs?

i'm not saying i'd pick and choose to be a jerk, its still honky dorry in rrb land, but there are things that will effect who i sell to, and i imagen the same goes for you.

long and short, being the seller i have the final say, not the person who calls dibs on my item.

Forget the dibs thing....just say what you're interested in in your post...ha ha.

totally on board.

i just didn't want roadmaster left with the wrong impression from my other post.

Another fine step in the right direction for ratbike kind....thanks Steve for bringing this up , now if I could stop people from asking about the stuff in the back ground....what do you want for the curtains on the window in the left hand third picture  really its not that bad.....and everything has a price
