The SA shifter is for a 2 speed, so I don't think the "49" dated 3 speed goes with the bike, thinking it is supposed to have a coaster or at least 2 speed older rear. Wheels are pitted pretty badly anyway, but man is this bike cool. :D Brought it home yesterday after it floundered on the local CL, buddy of mine was trying to sell it for a while. I don't know why I didn't get it sooner. ?? :?

that is beautiful, truly. i'm in love. but i'm not sure that it is a 2 speed shifter. doesn't it say low-n-high on it? as in low, normal and high? here'sa page from the 1938 brochure, is it the same?

Thanks for the tip, I assumed that meant neutral, normal makes more sense. I'm going to try flushing it out with some oil and putting tires on, go from there. (greasing everything as well)

I just picked up an old Wards with a three speed that's been sitting for... probably most of my lifetime. That had the same problem: first and third were fine but it would free-spin whenever I tried to peddle in second. I fed the hub a cup of SAE30 oil and adjusted it with help from diagrams on the How-To board (I actually had to go a bit tighter than what was recommended). Now it works like brand new.

That looks like it's going fast just standing still with it's flat tires. I wonder if it is factory or an old custom job. Looks a lot like my Racer with the gear and bar setup.
