Anyone know anything about this bike? I bought it off Craigslist the other day and I cant find any pictures of a Columbia with this frame style. This thing is in rough shape, had several repairs and is broken but it looks like it was an original tandem bike. It has a Columbia badge but no serial number I can find.

The back tube is welded both ends so it might not be original?

Never seen one like it but very cool. The bar coming from the front all the way down to the rear bottom bracket looks original. Columbia often have that bar that looks like it goes through the seat tube.

Never seen one like it. Sure looks home made. Either way you gotcha a real cool and unique tandem.

Very cool bike, in town there is an old tandem bike that someone has against their house as a lawn ornament. I'm keeping my eyes on it. It's a boy's bike in front but ladies in the back. Yours looks to be in pretty good condition, I like it a lot!

Yeah Im not really sure. I was sure the frame was factory but Im having second thoughts. The rear crank/sprocket is a hokey home made deal that is not right for a tandem... Either way I think it will clean up nice. My biggest concern is if it was factory and not very common I dont want to go and wreck it by welding gussets in... but I think thats the only way to stiffen it up enough to really make it a rider...

I'd check the Cabe and NBHAA archives, but that does have a homebuilt look to it. Most of those early Columbias have the serial # on the rear dropout, but on the chain side. Could be buried under paint. Cool find though! ~Adam

check it out... finally got a pic of the tandem im tryin to get. i have a question though... how does dual peddaling work with one chain connected to both sprockets. wouldn't the person peddaling harder do all the work? ps... forgot to mention, i should be gettin this for $100.

Yes whomever is pedaling harder is doing more work. The cadence is the same for each person. Ideally both people contribute equally. One can't coast while the other pedals. If one cranks moving they're both moving. At least n these tandems. Higher end I think each can freewheel independently.
