Well, I can across another batch of old, rough around the edges bikes courtesy of craigslist. These were in the barn at a horse farm a few miles away from Watkins Glen International. Nine bikes total (which made for quite a load in my Mountaineer), 6 of which were girl's bikes. But they were selling as a lot, so I took them all. Here they are when I unloaded them this afternoon.

Left to right, a Columbia "61 Special", a 24" Sears, a Ross Deluxe, a Rollfast, a Ross 10-speed, an English roadster-style Japanese bike called "Executive", some form of post-war Schwinn, a Murray Meteor Flite, and a little 20" girls bike.

The Columbia:

A middleweight, has chrome fenders, a horn tank, Mesinger saddle, a wire rear carrier. Says "61 Special" on the chain guard.

The Sears:

Has an aftermarket wire basket up front that was all sorts of trouble while loading and unloading.

The Ross Deluxe:

Not much to say, all surface rusted. Says Deluxe on the chainguard. The only noteworthy so far is that some put reflective tape all over it...

The Rollfast:

Another middleweight women's frame.

The 10-speed Ross:

Seems typical of '70s era 10-speed. Lugged frame, Shimano deraileurs, etc. I already don't like it; when I was carrying it upstairs, the fork/handlebars swung around & pinched my thumb, cutting it under the nail...

The Executive:

This bike's kinda neat. Has a three-piece crankset, caliper brakes, lugged frame, a two-speed hub with a twist grip (H-N-L positions), sprung saddle, and a fender set that has a distinct crease down the centerline. The front fender draws up to a round chromed tip.

The Schwinn:

Knobby tires, misassembled locking springer fork (no key though), has a Phantom-style chainguard, a stamped rear carrier with the cutout for a Phantom-tail light, badly brush painted. I haven't found a serial number on it yet - didn't see one on the dropout, the bottom bracket shell or the head tube. Might be filled in with paint, I suppose.

The Meteor Flite:

Tall ape hangers, stamped carrier, tank, bad repaint - including flames on the forks and redoing the original graphics by hand. I believe that this model is supposed to have a chrome bezel on the front of the tank that wraps around the headtube with twin headlights, and should have a wire carrier on the front, both features are now gone, along with its front fender.

And last, the 20" girls bike:

Kind of a cute thing, has a lugged frame, a bipod kickstand, North Road type handle bars.

And here they all are upstairs in my garage with my previous basement-find bikes.

I don't what I'll do with any or all of them yet. I couldn't pass up them up, although logic says I should've...

I'll bet that Schwinn is a Phantom, it has the large sprocket, chainguard, and carrier. Can you read a name on the chainguard? The serial might be on the left dropout and would identify the year.

OK, I found the serial number on the Schwinn. It is on the left drop out, it was just obscured by the fender and carrier stays. The number is A41284. I think that makes it a '53. Any original naming is obliterated by the blue brush job. However, there is red paint visible through scratches under the blue on the springer fork, the chainguard and the carrier. There is black paint under the blue on the headtube. So...could it actually be a Red Phantom? How would I know for sure?

There are rivets on the saddle, but I'd judge that it isn't the original saddle. It looks like the one on my father's AMF Roadmaster from the '70s. It doesn't look the one typically on a Phantom.

If the bike is/was a Phantom, it is now missing its taillight, headlight, rear reflector, front fender, tank, original handle bars & original saddle. The rear fender is there, but painted over with silver paint and rusted through. That's a lot of stuff - it'd probably cost something like $500 just to replace the missing bits, based on fleaBay prices. On the other hand, it would still cost a lot less to restore than a car would...
