I'm on the verge of buying one of these two and, uh....changing it.
I'm really tempted to go with the Schwinn as the name carries more weight with me. (From "back in the day"...not sure it means anything any more though?)
Anyone know any major differences between the two? Geometry, durability, work-with-ability, etc?
I read in a post here where someone noted that the Cranny's lines were well suited for a bobber style makeover. Would you say that would hold true with the Delmar as well? Thanks for any advice.

Alot of it will come down to styling of the bike but also look at the rear hub. Make sure it does not whine(noise) during any part of operation. The HiStop brand is notorious for this problem.

The Huffy's make a great base and I have seen more builds based on those than the Schwinn. The Schwinn of today is not the one with the good reputation. Schwinn is a name bought by Pacific Cycle.

I had a rat-rodded Delmar not too long ago. The frame is good, the rest of the parts are disposable, especially the hub.
I would choose the Delmar over a Huffy.

Don't forget the new OP cruiser at Wal-Mart for $109.

I looked at that online. The thing that worries me is that it is an alum frame, but the tubing doesn't seem oversized. Seems like it might not be the strongest frame. But it is cool looking and would make a great "base". wish it was steel...

It took some 'persuasion' to the chainstays and seatstays to fit my 24 x 3 tires into my Cranbrook. All I used was the frame and crank. It was a typical mass produced Chinese frame. I chose it by cost/availability vs. brand name, as my grandmother used to say: It's 6 one way, a half a dozen the other,

Good luck,
Dr. T

pics?! :D

never mind...found them. sweet ride. how tall are those black apes in the first couple pictures?
I think they were 19''

My current bike is a cranebrook frame with other parts on it. It is cranebrook in frame only though. I like the style of it myself. For me it's a nice compact cantilevered design that looks awesome with a set of apes. I don't know of many folk's opinion about the rear hub, but I had it motorized with it and it survived me grenading the engine. Right now I have a set of 26x1 3/8's with a three speed shimano BBB hub. If you are looking for a frame to build a bobber off of, this frame would be very good.

The DelMar is a pretty decent bike for the price, even if they're not like the quality of Schwinns of the past. I bought one about a year ago, which I've put through several iterations since. Rides really nice, handles VERY well, very light weight, and has been well worth the $112 I paid! As mentioned, you have to go over them for greasing, adjusting, etc., but a great little bike (this from a guy who collects old Schwinns).

Will a Phantom-style tank fit on a DelMar? A tank would go a long way in giving you a bobber-look bike.
I don't think so, the size and proximity of the down tube is visibly wrong. You could probably mod that, but I have a feeling that the curves in the top tube and cantilevers are probably different as well.
