Ok, I'm not interested in having a relationship with some forks, but I am interested in knowing when Schwinn was making the chrome "S" springers as opposed to the "AS" Springers. These are some NOS Schwinn springers that are pretty old - they had lots of surface rust, and a price tag that says $39 from Village Cyclery in Chico, CA. I cleaned them up a little, and they are looking pretty good.

These are different from the AS springers that I have on my old Phantom - in a lot of ways - and look more like the ones on, say, a Krate.

What I'm trying to figure out is when Schwinn started and stopped making these bad boys. They have the "S" nuts, not the "AS"... Unfortunately, Google has not been helping me here...

i'm not sure of the time line ? but it looks like you have a frank-en-fork , part repop and part OG. Schwinn , and if your goin to Village Cyclery in chico , yer 20 minutes down the road from me ! We should hook up some time and talk Bikes !

Hi Ralph,

So, funny thing, I didn't get it there - someone got it there a loooong time ago, and when they died, someone bought the estate, and I picked it up in Alameda at the flea market there. I'm down in Livermore. My brother in law went to Chico, maybe we should plan a ride up that way - do a little barcycling...

Not sure it's a franken fork - because the rust was consistent across the entire fork, yet the fork was never mounted - no wear or grease on the bearing race, no grease in the threads, no grease stains on the rust. The price tag is one of those old style ones - just the name of the store on the sticker and the price had written in. Also, the part of the fork that goes in the head tube is identical to those on a Krate, and it's not chromed - most of the newer stuff or the straight up fakes are chromed all the way up.

Schwinn dropped Mr. Arnold's name in '68. I think that's also close to the time when the Krates came out with the all chrome springer. Those were the first Schwinns with all chrome forks. You probably have some sort of replacement fork from that time period. Paint those legs...too much chrome! :p Gary
