Keyed up the buff ball on the long shaft and got to polishing.

Rolling mockup. Ignore the saddle, just there as placeholder. I wanted to try the tan walls, hoping desperately NOT to like the looks of them. But I know Matti, falls in love, and is lazy. So I left out the rim strips to be sure I'd take them off again.

It didn't go in without a hitch.

Axle width at the nuts was at least 5mm wider than the dropouts. I've never had to spread the stays this much before to make it fit. It was really difficult to get in there. Can I remove a spacer in there to make it fit with less struggle, or would that mess things up regarding how it's centered between the stays?

It can't hurt to try. You can always add it back.
