did all 60's Schwinns have front fender-mounted lights?

...or was that only available on certain models?

Saw these on the '66 I just picked up & didn't know if maybe I could narrow down a possible model based on the fact that some had 'em & some didn't.

I would say most models in the 60's DIDN'T have headlights. Yours could have, but it could also have been drilled and added later. It's a cantilever frame so that narrows it down, some more pics and a serial number would really help.

well, went out and sprayed a bunch of paint stripper on it, and barely visible on the chainguard is Schwinn TYP....

...so I'm guessing it's a TYPHOON.....

Your Typhoon was sold as an "unequipped" bike... that means no options, besides frame size, color, and drive hub (some were 2 speeds, most single speed coasters).

In Schwinn's world that means the bike came with no lights, no generator, no horn, no tank, no rack or seat tool bag.

Higher end models would have had some of these options, though most were not "equipped" until you got to the top of the particular model line. Dealers would do anything though to sell a bike. You want a rocket-ray light on a base Typhoon? No problem, we'll get you one. A fancier seat, or a generator or a horn, no problem.

Could easily have been added after with a piece from Sears or a Montgomery Wards store- both sold tons of accessories, if the owner didn't feel like going back to the actual Schwinn dealer.

I had a Deluxe Typhoon that came with a 2-speed and a front rack. Gary

Took me a while but I found the page I was looking for...

http://www.trfindley.com/flschwinn_1961_1970/1966_2021.html

The Deluxe Typhoon did come with the cool little middleweight front rack. But then you couldn't have mounted a fender light.

I do wonder how accurate the catalog page was or if there were mid year changes (from the Fastback pictures elsewhere, it's obviously taken from an early catalog). The Typhoons shown on that page have painted fenders, even the Deluxe model.

The base Typhoon even has painted rims. The Tiger, on the other hand has chrome fenders. There's not much keeping a Typhoon from being a Tiger if chrome fenders are fitted. Are you sure the chainguard doesn't say "TIG..." ?

Both models were offered in red that year as well.

Good luck with the restoration or whatever you do with it.

My Deluxe Typhoon was probably a '67 or '68 model. It had chrome rims and fenders along with the yellow band kickback. I sold it for $25 to the kid I gave my paper route to about '70. Gary
