does 2 rear brake's work ok.

Ok so im working on a bike and im thinking about using 2 brakes in the back...has anyone had a good turnout with than..Ill use 2 hand brakes on the bars but 2 brakes in the back....any help?
One to slow you down and the other to stop you...

Some of the old Sears Spyder and Screamer bikes had two calipers or a caliper and a drum on the rear wheel. Some had two hand brakes with the levers on the bars or one lever and a "drag brake" mounted on a stik shifter bolted to the top tube.
