Thought I posted on this build before but now that I have some updates I see there's no thread.

This is my lowered/stretched Gio scooter project which started out as a road side find on Recycle/Reuse Day. As you can see it's been lowered and stretched about 6". I just completed building a 72v 24ah lithium pack from LGHG2 cells. I'm planning to use a 50amp controller that I have, should be good for about 3500 watts and I'm hoping for about 45km/h with the little 16" wheels.

As found on road side.

All the plastic stripped off.

Shortened head tube 6"

Lock to make pedals into foot pegs.

Melding scooter cranks and regular bicycle cranks to tuck pedals in against frame as there's no body work to clear.

Mocked up with electrical components to ensure fit (it's tight).

Quick pic of battery during construction.

Mocking up dash panel for volt meter and ignition switch, rear rack is in card board stage now too. Also added some diagonal braces from under seat to parallel factory frame.

Looks like a lot of labor goes into those battery packs. 72v should move you down the road with aplomb. Cool project.

This is SO cool! I've always wanted a ruckus (even if all my chopper buddies would make fun of me endlessly) and never even considered transforming a cheap / used scooter! I'm gonna have to stay away from craigslist now... already have too many projects ;)

Ty: Craigslist? Remember I pulled this outta the trash on the side of the road...build away brudda!

Luke: I thought I'd posted it before it got lost beneath a pile of other projects, battery builds and a couple of months' of sub-zero weather but couldn't find it. When Photobucket pulled their dirty stunt, a bizillion pics were lost on the net forever! I'll fix the problem by re-posting all those pics in this thread after I upload everything to FB, especially now that I know there is a bit of interest in my project.

Thanks guys!

Yes I know... but I doubt I'd have your luck so craigslist would be my 'lucky' find

Dragged it outside to get a look at the progress after building the battery/controller supports in the bottom of the frame. Supports my 180lbs standing in it, so the battery should be safe enough with 3" of ground clearance....right? :tmi:

Performance review: The controller has a 3-speed switch to (somewhat) limit speed/power. Setting 1 is good for 40km/h, setting 2 about 50km/h and setting 3 seems like 60km/h as I can catch up to cars on hills. I am now officially traffic and no longer another 'road obstacle'.

Looks good. How’s the legality in your area? Here in aus it would be illegal. As it’s not a bicycle with electric assist it would need to be road registered.

I’ve just pulled one apart because they are no longer legal here. Hopefully the end result will resemble something that isn’t so obviously outside the law.

At that power level, no of course it's not legal, likely not anywhere in the world. Having the pedals on makes it appear legal if you're not seen doing over 32km/h, you're much less likely to be stopped/questioned. We have way too much real crime here for the police to waste time on the paperwork it would create. These scooters were never factory designed to actually be pedaled, just fit the legal definition of e-bike.

Thought as much. I’m sure the local police are similar. If you are doing anything that looks outside the rules they probably won’t care. Round here there is a $400ish fine for not wearing a helmet on a bike but they don’t seem to bother with that much either. Just if you get caught on an illegal e-bike you can end up with thousands in fines. There is also a bloke facing gaol time after he hit and severely injured someone while he was riding an illegal e-bike.
