Happens every year , nothing new , ther are lots of guys that go get them after the festivities believe me, I've gotten a few bikes that came from burning man in the past years , it's no fun getting that playa dust off those things it's quite a chore .
Wow, I couldn't imagine the amount of time it would take me or anyone else to clean and recondition all those bikes. I'd be better off to just scrap all those bicycles and then donate the money from the scrap metal for brand new bikes.

Walmart bikes are often made to be disposable though not this fast. They are not designed to be a longterm repairable bike. I dislike working on them at the coop. Mostly we strip cables, grips, seats and tires, then the bikes are recycled. The recycling money is used to fund various programs.
Maybe there's an X 53 in there somewhere! Or a 50's Schwinn at least.
I'd like to go through the whole bunch and see what's there.Probably a lot of people couldn't take a bike on the plane or bus ride home from Burning man. Maybe they can leave them and then air up the tires for next year. Tell everyone bikes will be available, don't bring a bike.
I remember helping refurbish donated bikes for the needy several years back, the walmart bikes were ready for the dump, after 4 hours of work with brakes and everything, they might have lasted a month before they were junk again. I was asked to not make them look good so they wouldn't get ripped off. That was the easy part.
How can you tell? Just because the front forks are backward doesn't automatically mean they came from Walmart. lol

While working for the state parks in the Lake Tahoe district for 8 years I seen a lot of those bikes go through on top of some unusual vehicles that almost always had piles of bikes on top of them , quite a site I must say ,
Once my wife spoke to a group that was coming from burning man and asked about a bike that was on top of ther multi colored bus and one of the guys claimed up , got it down and gave it too her , it was a modern take on a Krate bike called a "hot rod" .
