A drag bike for grown ups! I pulled in the the local parts store on the way to church. The thrift shop is next door. I spy a banana seat. 2 minutes and $15 later I had it stuffed in the Oldsmobuick!!!

Its a 24" twin to my 20" murray. Both have "Sportcrest" badges. Since my 20" was bought new at Kaufmanns (Pittsburgh thing) , I can assume this came from there too!

I need to do lotsa cleanup, but it looks real good. Dig the two side chainguard!!!

HAhahahaa! Sounds like you were afraid someone might yell "hey bring back that bike' any second you were in such disbelief of the find!

Floyd, beautiful find man. Those bikes are my specialty. It appears to be a 71 to 74 model. Post the serial and I will break it down for you. Here is a link to the correct rear reflector on ebay. NOS even.

Is there anyway I can talk you into emailing me full size pics to save in my library so to speak? And pics of your 20" too. By the way, if the serial isn't on the left rear dropout, it'll be on the side of the headtube. That bike is considered a Murray MK IV. Kenny.

30thtbird,

Thanks for the serial number breakdown offer. I will get those to you when I loosen the sissy bars, which seem to block a few numbers. I figured the 24" to be later than the 20" cause of the BMA sticker, but I'd sure like to date 'em! The original owner of the 20" believes he nought it new in 71. I can't provide good pics right now cause my digital camera died and since the phone does an ok job, we're gonna wait for a sale to replace it. Both bikes need a complete dissasembly and scrub first too. The pics make em look better. The 20" has a whole mess of the chrome painted silver. Why I don't know cause I've sos'ed a few spots and the chrome is great. I figure one of the guys kids musta covered light rust with it. The 24" Has lotsa rust, but a few quick spot cleans show much promise. I put air in the tires and hit the road! Seems the right side brake lever is incorrect though. First three speed I never had to adjust the shift cable!!

My little brother had a 1-spd coaster version of that 24" bike, I always thought that was one of the coolest looking frames ever 8) , and why did it come w/skinny rims?!? :?

This is what I have so far on the X numbers. We need to add to the list as more show up. Ron and I were talking about these numbers recently. We figure that a customer had to order a minimum number of bikes per order to have there own X number. If they didn't order a minimum number of bikes, they possibly shared an X number with a Murray badged bike. Kenny.
