Has anybody tried running a 4 inch tire on a standard cruiser rim? Does it work? How does it look? Just wondering…

I don't remember seeing that, but I know that with 26x4's I've seen people that ran 20x4 OCC tires on regular 20" wheels.

Actually, I think @gowjobs is running some fat tires on regular rims in his Oldster build

Yep. Origin8 Supercells 26x4's on regular cruiser rims :

The OD is almost 31" mounted, though, so not only do you need space for a tire that's over 3" wide, but also that extra diameter.

It's a custom frame, so tire clearance shouldn't be a problem. I'm just wondering if the chain will clear without rubbing the sidewall. I do have an offset sprocket for it so I might have to just bite the bullet and give it a try

I'm waiting on my cranks to show up, but I'm using a 10mm offset Ruff sprocket and a square taper bottom bracket with a longer-than-normal 131mm spindle, so I expect to clear the tire okay. I'll let you know how it all shakes out when I get it together, but the chainring that I wanted was out of stock. I okayed the change to another style, so we'll see if that speeds up delivery from Paul's Components.

Wide tires on a narrow rim= higher profile (section height), lower section width.... and potential for bead failure. (Skinny tires on a wide rim risk the bead rolling off the hook...)

Wide tires on a wide rim will have the opposite aspect ratio.

It's impossible for me to say whether or not it will interfere with your chain, but the same tire is less likely to rub the chain on a narrow rim than it would be on a wide rim.

HTH

I've run 3" tires on regular rims, just never tried anything bigger...at least not yet
:cool2:

Might explain why some Mallwart china bikes like to blow tires off the rims - some of those rims are skinny !
